I was looking at a Gateway PC a little while back. It was a P4 system 2Ghz and there was no thermal goop or pad between heatsink and CPU There was no case fan either becusase the oinly case fan was use to draw air away from the CPU's hS/F. Between the CPu and hatsiink was a shiny piece of metallic looking material. It seems to work cause the system hasn't crashed.
What is up with this?
How do these manufacturer get away with such **** building and lack of cooling. The thing is so noisy though with just one fan that cools only the cpu. it is an 80 mm case fan nothing else. PSU don't have fan either but this one fan is so freaking loud.
My old TIME pc had a label in it which said
PROCESSOR TEST : -
GRAPHICS TEST : -
CHASSIS INSPECTION : -
CD BURNER TEST :Signed [Some Signature]
FINAL COMPUTER TEST : -
I assumed the - meant failed or not tested... and the CD - Burner died later anyways
And guess what, i only looked in 5 days before the end of the warenty and when i phoned, they disclaimed that that could happen and the ink must have faded
Build your own PC or at least check it inside thoroughly when you get it, torture test it too.:t
I agree with him totally and I suggest you build your own PC.

Correction to the Thread:
It was a Dell at my workplace. The Gateway had similar cooling tactics but the DELL is the one I meant to post about.
Personally I always build my own but in the workpplace where we need mission critical PCs, we do not have Time to Build them install all of the software and troubleshoot any problems. And if they fail, the warranty covers them and we can blame Dell.

The new Dells are so silent (at least compared with my computer). My friend has a Dell and I want to open it just to see how they do that. It probably has only one cooling fan too.

yep I had a dell, just sold it a few weeks ago, the only thing that was on my P4 Chip was a large Bulky looking Heat Sink, there was a green funel like plastic thing that ran out over the Heat sink to the the rear case fan which cooled it down, kinda freeky when you see it frist but kinda cool, nice and quite, the only thing bad I have to say is, I could never over clock my lil old dell to give it a test :), but as i said it was nice and quite.

Yes the Dells are silent but this thread idea was been conjured at the same time asanother thread idea in the back of my mind so I mixed them up.
More Corrections:
The Dell has one fan (80 mm) that is used to cool the CPU by means of a duct..It also has a PSU fan and yet it is the quietist one.
The Gateway has one fan for the CPU located in the same place the Dell one is but it is much much louder.....The Gateway case is cover with plastic and sound like a room full of computers. it sound s like a vacuum cleaner...
The Dell is the one with the weird cooling setup, I haven't looked at the Gateway....
DELL is definetl better...
I wish that somebody would, just once, put a thermal diode in one of the silent runners. It may silence a lot of open jawed folks when they see how hot they're really running.
In Singapore, Dell is quite popular because it's providing cheap computers for the people. On the other hand, the quality is not that good. A lot of people complained that Dell (Singapore) has some problems providing reliable PCs for its customers. Many people rather choose Acer or HP than Dell now. Although the prices are different, the other two brands are much more reliable and fantastic.

well I can see some truth in what u said cdh, I had my dell 4400 for two days, bame hard drive cashed. unreal, I couldnt understand how it could go just like that, dont ask me why I bought it, I should have went and just made my own, but you know, you live and learn as i did, I dont think I would buy a Dell again, although there systems are pretty cheap, I build all my own, even cheaper and better :)

Last system was a Dell P3 1000mhz. Pretty good system for what it was. Found I could not upgrade the mobo nor the cpu. They were willing to sell me another computer though. Problem is with Dell(in my case), the mobo and the p/s were not atx(different pin outs). The sound blaster was a SB live digital. I had bought the THX digital sound system. When I called tech support, they said the digital output jack did not work with the "Dell Sound Blaster Live Digital" BTW, it had the 80mm fan with the little funnel to the cpu also, was very quiet though. System lasted me 2 1/2 years, and I broke down and built one myself. Glad I did, as it was fun. and now every thing is atx when I want to upgrade. I found the research for what parts to buy was the hardest part.
