annoying msg pop ups

my gf mam bought a comp from time for way to much (but thats not the porblem)

the problem is that every now and again a msg box pops up which is very annoying it pops up al the time, is there any way to get rid of it (os: win XP Home)

Disable Windows Messenger Service

Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK
