I am going off to uni in October and will be taking two PCs (one server, one work pc). The uni network restricts users to one computer per room. I was wondering if I could use a standard broadband router to connect to the network so it shows up as one computer. The uni network uses IPs in the 172.16.* range and if I use IPs in the 198.168.* range. Would using one of these routers within the uni network present a problem? Would I have difficulties then routing through that network to the outside world while still being able to access other computers on the uni network.

Also do all the broadband routers that have ethernet connections also work plugged into a network rather than an ethernet modem?

Thanks for any help,

Alistair

You'll need to disable DHCP on the router so that you're in effect using a switch. Not sure if this will allow what you need though.
