The computer techs at my office recently brought in our new PIII 1.0gig Compaqs. Decent computers with 19" monitors and a 12x CD-R but that is pretty much the extent of it. Upon asking I was told the cost for each computer+monitor was a little over $4000. I told them that I thought that sounded like a rip off to me. Their explanation for the cost was that the computers were built with 'industrial parts' and that they were far better than an individual could buy at their local Best Buy.
Does that sound reasonable to anyone?

Sorry, didn't really see anything "tech" about my question. I may call it the common cold, but an epidemic is a little extreme don't you think?

Doesn't this have to do with computers? Anyway, whatever, it's not my place to decide where what belongs.
Every single day there are many topics of which are posted in the wrong thread.
Sorry, didn't mean to **** up your thread...

You've been had. Usually when a company buys Compaq workstations it's because they got them inexpensive. There is no logical reason why a compaq should be $4000 with those specs. I highly doubt they come with "industrial" parts. What would "industrial" parts be anyways? SCSI hardrives? I say you have someone do an audit of you IT department.

I buy many Compaq Deskpro EN SFF computers because of size and features. I recently bought several PIII 1.0gig with 256megs, sound, cdrom, & NIC for about $1100 each. You can easily find that price right now. Add in a decent $250 monitor and you're under $1500.
The only reason this type of computer *may* be worth $4000 is if they have NEMA approved enclosures for an extremely constant dirty/dusty enviroment. Can't say I've ever even seen a Compaq computer with that type of rating before.
Wow! $4,000... Imagine how much more that system could've been...

Whats sad is we just got a Dell L1000r and 17" monitor for just around $1100. (1ghz plus 128MB RAM, NIC and integrated vid) Plus that comes with Dells 3yr service guarantee. Your IT deparment is either stupid or embezelling from your company. I'd have an audit done on them like Yar1182 recommended. My $.02

$4k sounds reasonable to me, for Moronic Management Idiots..
We too have some of those high dollar units.
Our Dell 600's with 256mb RAM, LAN card, wimpy HD,, slow as smoke off a fresh pile of dog doo on a cold morning ,,
cost -->> $3,500 <<--
Ya see, we "Lease" them that way after we pay the enormous amount per month to total up to 3.5k we get to GIVE THEM BACK..
I told the plant manager even ol dumas me could build twice the machine for half the money..
Regulatory BS, Back-Lab fees to make "sure" that the cutting edge software, Windows NT 4.0 is "compatible" with our cutting edge server,, YEA, RIGHT.
Just another way to throw away money and charge the consumer for our excesses..
rant rant

Throw some solid state HDDs in there and you've got a computer http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

12X CD-RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR MOUAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!
I'll bet that the IT guys just repeated what the shipper insured the PC for, not what it's actually worth. Then again - if that 19" screen is a flat plasma screen - that might do it......
DemonKnight - I'd love to get my hands on some solid state drives - Those were running about $16,000.00 for a 3GB RAM drive last year - haven't looked at them since then - WAYYYYYYY out of my price range.

Only two options here. Someone is very stupid and has no clue what they're doing or they are real smart and got a very big kickback from Compaq sales. I think it's time to call the auditors.

Hmmm.... first of all Compaq's are the WORST computers anyone can buy. Second, anything short of their 'enterprise' servers, is well under 4K. Your IT guys are lying to you. Plain and simple. I doubt they are embezzling money from your company, because 4K for a compaq is like 60k for a Chevy Metro (formerly GEO). They would not be that stupid... would they?
