Many of us went through various twists to restore this file after finding it was not a virus.
I've just learned of something I knew existed but couldn't find. You can "<u>Extract one file from installation disk</u>".
>Start >Programs >Accessories >System Tools >System Information >Tools >System File Checker ><u>E</u>xtract one file from installation disk.
I wonder if they could have hidden it any deeper! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

lol I never wory about virus, I live in IRC and it's easy to pick something up when you are D/Ling in there. if my virus scanner can't clean it, I wipe the HDD and star over again. the key word here? Back up your drives

Just a note for Madfish...There are...

True)...Virus out there that won't go
bye bye when you Re-Partition and Re-Format.
They're particularly Nasty...I don't turn

Shagnasty - the stubborn viri are usually MS Windows/DOS specific and often they become memory resident so they will write themselves back to the drive. Sometimes they can be purged by simply using a Linux boot disk to format or zero fill the drive and fdisk/overwrite the mbr.

If Roy's suggestion doesn't work. Put your windows disk in and go to the tools folder and install the windows resourse kit (reskit). In it is a program called microsoft file info. With it you can find where a file is located on the windows cd or floppys. Some times file checker won't do it without the cab file number.
Plus it also gives a discription of what the file does.

I wipe the HDD and star over again. the key word here? Back up your drives/ Are you kidding??? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif At my age that could be the most excitement I have in a week.. My sister looked at me one day and said "Surreal you just have to walk on the edge don't you?" (regarding my lack of back up) And in some strange way, yep I do, it's so much more of a triumph when it starts to go and you catch it... lol http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You should all read this: http://www.jokeaday.com/7aolexe.shtml
I do not respond well to the words "you should".
I looked at your link anyway, and stopped the download after 5 minutes at 50Kbps. So what's the big deal? An explanation of the "virus" we mostly all know was a hoax several weeks ago.
What a cruel joke on me.
What a waste of time.
Thanks.

"So what's the big deal?"
Big deal is that someone simply copied the idea into a fake email saying to remove AOL.exe with completely stupid excuses (i.e. it will raise your IQ several points) and some people actually did it.
"What a waste of time."
No need to jump down my throat...
EDIT: No yelling...
