scrambled screen

I got this old pc for my daughter but had monitor problems, would not turn on. I reinstalled video card in another slot and it came on, the screen is great on bootup and shutdown, but when desktop comes up it is scrambled and fuzzy. Any ideas on why, I have reinstalled several times but still is the same. Thanks

Sounds like the resolution or refresh rate is set too high. Next time you boot, tap f8 until you get the boot menu. Choose safe mode. From there, right click on the desktop, click properties, settings, advanced, adapter, change. Choose a standard pci adapter and reboot. You should be able to see the desktop after that.
