Alright, Im building a new comp, and I need to install win98 on it. Can I just pop in the cd and boot from it by changing the boot order in BIOS or do i have to go into dos first and install my cdrom drivers?

If I can just pop it in without the drivers can somebody explain how it works? cuz dos and windows dont even recognize a drive until you install the drivers.

Yep, you just set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first, save & exit, pop the CD in and there she goes!!! You will be asked whether you want to boot from HDD or CD then, having selected CD, you will be asked whether you want to start the windoze setup, start the PC with CDrom support, or without.

I have no idea how it works, but it does. It had something to do with RAMDRIVE, where, I believe, a virtual drive is created in the system RAM (perhaps)

The CDROM drivers take about a minute to load, so be patient with it!

EDIT: typos!

Geez, your comps must be different than mine.....

All I did when I got my parts was, since there was nothing on the hd, as soon as I turned it on, it did the check for my cd-rom and hd, than it went straight to dos prompt.

Than all I did was pop in the win98 cd, typed in d:, typed cd win98, then typed setup. Then I went through the windows setup, and that was it....

NOTE*
I did have to change some cmos, because there was some conflicts in the setup of the default bios settings.

Anyone else do it like I did?

I installed no drivers for my cd-rom, my computer detected it itself. Is yours IDE or what?

Dude, theyres no way you could have DOS on your comp
without having DOS on your hard drive. You probably
just didnt look. And Theyre isn't a snowball's chance in hell
that you could get into your cd drive from dos without
installing CD ROM drivers. You know how much trouble I went
through just to get my CD ROM Drive to work under DOS on my old comp?

Booting from Win98se cdrom? I was lucky to stumble upon a 3.5" Win98 bootdisk. Problem I had (just last night) was wrong cdrom driver, which I had to install onto custom bootdisk. I made around 300 copies of that **** bootdisk and placed copies throughout my house! Then I CD'd Windoze. I spent forever (well, almost) getting this seemingly simple task accomplished. Seems everytime I install a new HD I have to relearn process. "ahhhhhhhh!"

Depending on where you get your hard drive..
it could be un-partitioned...or it could
be partitioned, formatted and even have
enough Dos on it to boot to command prompt..
I've had all different combinations...
Some places even put Windoze, ready to
setup on there...

From my experiance windows 98 and 98 se WILL NOT boot from the CD, they need a boot disk. win2k will boot from CD but win98 doesnt.

Set your bios to boot from cdrom. Win98Fe or Se will partition and format your drive. Then load itself. Some older boards do not have the boot from cdrom bios feature. These require a startup disk with cdrom drivers... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Demoknight I don't know what kind of computer you are trying to load windows on but win 98 and sec edition are both bootable. Some older computers require a driver but most newer moBo's will let you boot straight off the cdrom.
No flaming intended Junior
