I get about 9500 on 3dmark 2001 and I'm thinking I should be getting at least a few thousand more.

My system:
GeForce4 Ti 4400 128mb
P4 1.8
768 mb corsair DDRAM
Asus P4S8X mobo
80 gig Seagate 5200 rpms
and I'm running Windows XP Pro

I ran msconfig and disabled everything at startup except AIM, I got ad-aware and ran it, I have the latest Nvidia detonator drivers, I have Antialisasing and AF off...

I also put my System Restore memory to a minimum, as thats supposed to be a resource hog.

both my processor and Geforce are running stock. I just have the Intel stock fan on my CPU so I don't know if its safe to overclock that, and I took off my case fans because they were too noisy so I don't know if its safe to overclock my Geforce.

I even got some new "graphics port accelerator" drivers for my motherboard. I defragged my hard drive and ran disk cleanup.

All that and no improvement whatsoever.

I should be scoring better right? Does anybody have any ideas?
:(

in the advanced display options of the control panel make sure vsync, antialiasign and anisotriopic filtering are set to disabled before benching

They're all off.

I'm running in 1280x1024, by the way.

Sounds right to me then that score, run at 1024x768, its the standard benchmarking resolution

I just ran it again in 1024x768 and got about 9600, basically the same score.

Sounds about the most you'll get anyway to me with that system at stock, overclocking the vid card and CPU should see you into the 12,000mark range and beyond

Hmmm, sounds good to me.

Do you think I can overclock them with my P4 running with the stock Intel fan and no case fans running? Or should I invest in a new fan and maybe a new cooler case?

Oh yeah, the only reasong I'm making such a big deal out of this is because I want Half-Life 2 to run supremely :D and I don't want to have to upgrade at all, as I am extremely low on funds.

HL 2 will run fine afterall its aimed at Direct X 6 hardware minimum spec's, i doubt you'll get it running all AA, Anisotropy etc though on an older spec like that. HL2 should be fine, Doom 3 though might be a bit choppy although it shuld still run well enough on minimal detail (which still looks stunning).

As for the CPu i wouldnt reccomend any mega overclockign with the stock cooler, but you should be able to get a hundred or so Mhz on the stock cooler without worrying

I just went into BIOS and overclocked it to 2.4 Ghz, which I'm thinking might be overkill. The good news is its still running at a cool 33 degrees but I'll be sure to keep a close eye on it for the rest of the day.

There were only two options for CPU speed in BIOS, 1.8 and 2.4. Is there a different way to overclock it?

Also, how do I overclock my Geforce?

Overclocking the video card:

by yours truly ;)

As for the CPU, im not an intel man so couldnt say, generally though you should look for a CPU frequency setting and manually adjust that

Hey thanks for all the help BigJakk, I really appreciate it. I'm glad theres still people out there willing to help a guy out from time to time :)

How are your scores looking at 2.4ghz, i reckon that would give a fair boost?

I just got 10,858 3d marks, so about a 1,300 improvement. I think I'm going to try to overclock my Geforce now...wish me luck, I'm goin' in!

EDIT: I overclocked my Geforce about 20% like you said and scored about 11,800. From what I've heard from other people's scores mine still seems like it should be higher but oh well, I'm happy with it :)

It probably should be a tad higher yeah, im hitting about 12500 at 1024x768 with a 2400Xp+ @ 2.35Ghz (about XP3100+) and gf4ti4200 @ 280/600Mhz.

Try running a spyware cleanup using spybot and adaware and a disk cleanup using dustbuster and then give the system a defrag see if that helps any. Also kill any unwanted apps at startup using msconfig

The problem of course may be the CPU, not to start a flame war here, but some of the older P4's have really limited performance due to soem issues with the Cache and the 2.4ghz p4 is probably equal to AMD's 2ghz offering (xp2400+)

Yeah believe it or not I already ran ad-aware and norton, ran disk cleanup and defragged my hard drive and disabled just about everything at startup with msconfig. I got my GF 4 ti 4400 up to 300/620, by the way.

So I guess I'm pretty much maxed out.

I know AMDs are supposed to run a little faster in comparing Ghz but I had an athlon xp 2100 and I had nothing but trouble, mostly from VIA i think. Also the thing ran insanely hot, around 70-80c on average so I had to get a huge copper fan that sounded like a lawnmower to keep it alive.

I really like my P4 now, mostly because I haven't had one problem with it, it overclocks really well obviously, and even with the overclock it runs at a super cool 28-33c with the stock Intel fan.

So yeah regardless of 3d mark score I think I'll be sticking with Intel.

I have a suspicion that my Leadtek GF4 could be a little underpowered, but I don't know if its possible to have a descrepancy like that between card manufacturers.

Got a 128 MB Ti4400 as well and hit 12012 on 3Dmark2001 with Barton 2500 at stock speed and Vid card at stock. Even clocking my Barton to 2400MHz that's 500+ MHz above stock the mark is not significantly higher so I think that's it's limit without clocking the video card which I don't bother doing as there isn't a game I play that needs the clocking yet. Vid card is Leadtek a250 and will clock to 315/660 but I don't see the point for the moment although I have benched it at this speed it hits just under 13000, so what's the point.

Think 12000 is the target range for Ti4400 cards. I'm sure others have higher scores but bet it's clocked high and got added cooling etc.

What tweaking utility are you using? Set everything to best performance and run again. Run it right after you reboot, and disable anyh=thing you don't need. I used to be really into 3d2k and 3d2k1 a ouple of years ago. Even had the top spots of every one of my setups for months, now I am no where near the top, but everything still runs great.

I think that scores about right teminator

Ive got a tbred b @ 2.35Ghz and a ti4200 eunning @ 'ti4500' sorts of speeds and i can just about get over 12500 marks

Wow, my system must be really messed up!

System Specs:
A GOOD 350w PS
AMD XP 2400+
Asus K7S5A mobo
512mb PC2100 Samsung <--weakest link in my system
GeForce4 Ti 4600 128mb
WD 60gb 7200rpm 2mb cache HD
SB Audigy

With this system, my score is a whopping 5900
Resolution is 1024x768 32-bit color. Anyone know WTF is up? Others are getting higher scores with lower power systems.:(

In the advanced section of display properties in the control panel, when benchmarking make sur eyou have Vsync, Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering set to disabled ;)

Thanks, turning off that stuff helped a lot with my score, but I am still only getting 10,663.

compare other peoples 9100's w/ yours on the 3dmark database-see what driver versions there using.

read thru the database for the best drivers. I personally think anything DX9 sucks. If you really want to max your scores format your hard drive, put on new os w/ dx 8.1 & DX 8.1 drivers. Not the newest version. That is the only way to know for sure.

maxis24 i compared my score to yours and i beat yours by 11 points. I think your settings aren't optimized. Otherwise how could my oc'ed Ti4400 (315/650) with an XP 2000 beat your setup. I run my tests with the highest quality mipmapping and quality settings(except AA and AF and texture sharpening) I have figued out that most peoples benchmarks on sysopt use all performance settings which is fine but most people dont say if they use these or not. Anyway one thing that will boost your score is go to the d3d tab and set pci texture memory to about 95. Go where it says More Direct3D and make sure vsync is off and make sure its not "rendering more than about 3 frames ahead"(default) with these settings you should be able to get a higher score. I also have pc 2100 and i think its the main reason for the "low" score.

oh yeah i'm using 44.03 drivers. i havent used any others but these seem to be fine.
