I'm using my computer and it restarted by itself after using it for maybe 10 minutes.

First I thought it was my house, but it's not. It keeps happening.

I just recently changed to a 5 dollar heatsink cuz before it was too loud.

Could that be the problem? cpu overheating?

My gut is telling me that is EXACTLY the problem..I'd check to make sure you applied enough heat sink compound and that the heat sink and fan are installed correctly...:t

roger that.

I left the computer with a certain window open for maybe a few hours and it stayed on.

I guess it was the game starcraft i was playing that caused the restarting.

I will put the old one back and I smell smoke or some sort, but computer still runs. Is that possible?

Firstly i would check you have installed the HS the right way around (it shoudl be flush with the CPU), as i sued to get this when i was young(er) and foolish and once installed a cooler master **** end first.

If not, then check the CPU fan is connected in properly, if it is though, i reckon it just aint capable of cooling you system, get sumink a bit beefier

What happens when you try? I can get it easily. If you're using a download accelerator, bypass it.

90% confirm is the heat problem! I used to have that problem with my AMD PC last time.

What type of PC have you got???

Try going to System Properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovery and uncheck the Automatically Restart box

Then when system crashes see what error message says.

I'd say the others are right about youre CPU overheating But its worth giving this a try:t

GoodLuck
