As far as general use they are the same. I prefer external which costs a bit more due to it being more flexible .

The main thing is to get a hardware modem. Internal hardware modem's are harder to find, but they are out there. 3com make's some hardware ,and some winmodem's. creative does the same. I am presently using a creative modem blaster (hardware)

external's are hardware .

if your present external is a 56k I would stick with it and save some cash for other part's.

Not all external modems are "hardware".

There are two "departments" that can be handled by the OS instead of being "onboard" the modem. Winmodems remove one or both.

I have 3 $10 PCI Winmodems that routinely connect at 50Kbps and perform as well as my $80 Zoom PCI hardware unit.

3com no longer owns US Robotics.

I stand corrected.

I echo the above sentiments regarding hard/soft modems. Note: If you purchase external with USB interface, I'd recommend an independent power supply (AC Adaptor) as bus powered modems often disconnect.

Good luck with your new system.

Right now my t-bird 850 has a creative modem blaster and is hardware.

I've always used internal modems, never an external modem.

My external modem rules, my flatmate has the internal version & it isn't quite as good.

I get very good speed & reliability, plus it works under linux (my OS of choice) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I would say go for external if you can spare the extra cash.

External is nice when you need to swap modems with another computer for some reason. If you will never need to do that and dont mind losing an expansion slot, go with internal to save some $$. If you decide to buy a really cheap one(winmodem) check the return policy of the store. Its really a gamble. I have seen a few winmodems that were extremely fast.

Thx all think I'll just get another modem the same as what i already have I have had no trouble with it at all and it is fast. as far as it goes I just wondered if there was much of a diff.

Man, I sure have never seen an external winmodem.

External are better.

I personally prefer to go with an external modem my self. The ease in swapping it to another PC is one reason and not using an expansion slot is the other. Stuck on dialup till my local cable company gets in our area then I'll be going to a cable modem.

Any external (standard serial, not USB) will give you the best performance. Period.
Next best would be an internal HARD modem (getting difficult to find, but the Diamond Supra Express is on sale right now from www.diamondmm.com (http://www.diamondmm.com) for $19).

CMonster, look carefully at some USB modems, there ARE USB winmodems around!
