golfcart,
LOL, sounds like my old computer.. had to have a desk fan blowing on the back of the case so the thing wouldn't overheat and crash on me..

CMonster,
2/3 fans?? is that 2 or 3 or two thirds a fan?? LOL

50mm Graphics Chipset Fan @ ?RPM (Tennmax Lasagna on Geforce2 GTS)
~60mm CPU Fan @ 4600RPM (Agilent Articooler)
----
7 Fans

Wow thats more fans than I thought...

I have 2 Slotfans and a 2x120mm CardCoolerXT in a box, but realized they didn't help much in my system/environment, so I took 'em out to lower noise.

I remember with my old P2 350. I couldn't settle for a measly 434Mhz stable. If I overclocked to 497Mhz, I would need the 19" Oscillating fan blowing in it to not crash. I remember going to sleep or going out and coming back to find out my mom turned off the fan and a BSOD on my monitor. Happened about 3 times. I then decided to get me a $50 Alpha (forgot the model name..the Slot1 One). No more crashes!

As you people may remember, I am a real cooling buff. I have a Sunon 80mm case fan in the front (I gave the old Yate Loon fan to my Grandpa), a Sunon 92mm fan in the fan-duct assembly, a Top Motor/Dynaeon Industrial 80mm fan in my power supply (Antec PP253x), a Golden Orb with a 60mm Everflo fan (standard), an Adda 40mm fan/heatsink on my 3D Blaster TNT2 Ultra, and a 60mm Yate Loon fan to blow the hot air away from the graphics card heat sink.

=6 fans.

Retail companies like IBM and HP do a poor job in providing proper cooling on their computers. My IBM computer which has a P3 500mhz processor has only a fan on the heatsink and the HP computer which has a P233mmx processor has a huge heatsink on it with a shroud over it and a 80mm case fan blowing air onto the heatsink.

I used to have eight:
1 in the power supply (loud)
1 on the processor (medium)
3 on the hard drives (medium)
1 on the video card (quiet)
1 intake in the front (medium)
1 exhaust in the back (loud)

This was way too noisy for me, and it's because of this that I began my plans for a silent computer. In the system I am currently building, I will have one fan. At that, it is an 80mm Panaflo L1A (21 dBa). I am relocating the power supply to the bottom front, and the fan will suck through a heater core (water cooled system http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ), and blow onto the power supply. The only exhaust in the case will be through another massive heater core (from a 1970 Delta Oldsmobile). This is my way of killing three birds with one fan. I may take some aluminum to shop to make bigger heatsinks for the power supply (since I don't know how it will cope with having hot air spewed on it), or I might just build some small water blocks for the VRMs, I haven't decided yet.

I once had 9 fans. CPU is a P3 650@806 @ 1.7 V. Idle temperature was my room temperature, and max load temp. was less than 46.

After long months of researching and repositioning, I finally managed to maintain that temperature, all with just 2 fans.

So I have 2 fans now. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I like to call it my "cone of silence", keeps the noise from the rest of the house out quite well.

1 x 120mm intake (out of an old Compaq 286)
2 x Gamma28s exhausting over the cards
1 x Avvid HS w/Shicoh metal bladed fan on Video
1 x YS-Tech 60mm breathing for the Alpha PAL6035
1 x 92mm case fan intaking over the drives
2 x 92mm power supply fans in the 300Watt PS with thermal alarm. (It NEVER goes off for some reason)

I used to have another Gamma working as exhaust near the top of the case, but the mounting was never quite right and it didn't seem to do much.

Currently 4 only, did have more but too noisy.
I have come to realise it's not the number of fans you have but how you use them.
I now have the standard Power Supply setup at top of the case, a 80mm fan at front bottom of the case for intake.
But the best thing I have done for a long time with my system (1gig T/Bird 266) is to connect my Global Win HSF up to a duct that draws the hot air directly out the back of the system using another 80mm fan.
All I did was make a card board duct that fits around the cooler, leaving the fan to suck cool air from inside the case, down to the motherboard back to the case where i positioned the 80mm fan.
Result 4deg drop in CPU temp.

Athlon System:

- Taisol Copper HS with FOP32 fan
- 80 mm front intake fan
- Slot exhaust fan below GeForce card
- fan on GeForce card
- Exhaust fan on HS
- Case 60mm exhaust fan in back

- 6 fans: 1.3 @ 1.5 (85F to 127F)

Intel PIII System:

- Stock fan on 600E CPU
- 80mm front intake fan
- HS exhaust fan

- 3 fans: 600 @ 600 (85F - 95F)

Let's see
1 Power Supply Standard
3 80mm Case Fans (Rated 50cfm)
1 Golden Orb for the PIII 1.0gb
(Never seen higher than 32C.)
1 Mini Orb for the Abit Siluro GF2 MX Video
Hmmm, I need more. I've noticed that my
4-40gb 7200rpm ata100 HD's have been a little
warm to the touch...I think maybe I need to
mount an intake to blow through them...I
don't really see putting a fan on my Sound

had a heat problem from a Sound Card...but
you never can tell...It's Cool to be Cool...

Not enough in mine yet. My earlier post shows 10, but its not enought yet. The computer is still on the ground. I'm trying to get that hover mode to start working.
Can barely hear my computer across my house.
So I either need to add more fans or get some louder ones.
