Hi, me again http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm planing on running my own webserver for my business, once it's finished... And was wondering if a webserver (including CGI scripts & such) can be run from Windows 2000 Professional. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive in the mail.. so i really haven't played around with it much.. Will i need to buy Windows 2000 Server to do this? (or NT4)

Thx guyz.

WIN2K Pro is the desktop variety. You need one of the server versions
www.directdeals.com (http://www.directdeals.com) has them as cheap as they get. I believe they buy surplus stock.
http://www.directdeals.com/product.asp?id=1145 is the cheapest one there.

Yes you can from win2k Pro. It does have IIS built-in.

There are several ways you can run a webserver from a Windows 2000 Professional machine. In fact, it is better to do this from a Pro machine then a Server machine if you are planning on using the computer for everyday work also. As someone mentioned, IIS (Internet Information Server) is included in Windows 2000 Professional, however it is not installed ususally. You would need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and then Add/Remove Windows Components and check the box for IIS. IIS includes a web and FTP server as well as an SNMP server. The only drawback to using this method is that IIS can be difficult to figure out if you are just starting out. There are many free and shareware web servers out there available for download. Check out http://tucows.tampabay.rr.com/win2k/httpserver2k.html for a list of a few. *Note... this is a link to my local Tucows mirror and may be no where near you. Another place to find information on web servers is C|Net Download...www.download.com, click on Web Authoring and then Servers. If you are looking for the easies to set up and use web server, it is probably from AnalogX (www.analogx.com), called the Simple Server. I doesn't supprot CGI or anything else other then straight HTML, but it may be a good start. Another good one, that I use is LiteServe (www.cmfperception.com). It works very well, and actually functions as a Web, FTP, POP, and SMTP server all in one. It is very easy to use and supports CGI. Good Luck.

Thanks guyz..
I'm sure i'll be back, posting more questions.. seeing how i've never run my own webserver, as soon as i get win2000 up, and get settled in after my big move from New Hampshire, to Florida (WHOOHOO!!) next week http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks again!

Win2K Pro will only allow a total of ten people to be on your site at one time. Go with 2K Server or Advanced Server. I run a forum on my 2K Server at home with no problems.

NASCARFOOL is correct, if you use IIS, a 3rd party webserver does not have this limitation.
