Is it true that most E-Machines come with low-powered power supplies that are already fully stretched?

If it is true, you would have to check what the power output of the PSU is before you even upgrade the RAM.

Yeah, it's true. You can get better quality replacements for them from Directron.

Eric Legge-

Yes, e-Machines come with the weakest power supply units installed. In fact, they use similar power supplies as the HP micro-atx/mini-atx platforms and that they are rated for what is installed and no reserves at all to drive any additional loads!

I'm talking about anywhere from 75-watts to 150-watts power rating on a SFX-S or a SFX-L type power supply. If you intend on replacing the PSU (Power Supply Unit), then I recommend getting your replacement from PC Power & Cooling Inc. They carry a 180-watt version of the SFX-S or SFX-L PSUs. It is called the Turbo Cool 180 SFX-S or the Turbo Cool 180 SFX-L power supplies. They are the best replacement that you could purchase as a replacement PSU.

Here's the link to their site:

Hope that it is helpful to you. Good luck.:)

Thanks for the replies.

I remember reading that somewhere, but wasn't too sure if my memory was correct.

I visited some suppliers of E-Machines, but none of them provide any useful product specifications such as the make and model of PSU, motherboard, HDD, etc.

People I know have these PCs, and others have buying them in mind. Their pricing is good, but you wouldn't buy one if you want to upgrade it without replacing the PSU to begin with.

when you get right down to it, it's ridiculous what emachines does in foisting their machines on folks who are looking for "value" and don't realize they're not getting it!

Add ONE mem stick that 8 more watts. How about games-gotta hae atleast a G4 ti4200 ooops there goes another 80watts. Lets not even talk about real cpu's that run from 60watts and up! So you think you have 80watts to spaire when their isnt 8watts left? And hmmm 150watts pcu -80watt video ='s 70watts to run entire system. Avg. cpu 50watts or so- you 20watts for hdd, cdrom, mem stick you have now-audio and all periphials (pci add ons etc.) then each usb controler and device requires some power. Your really stretching that 20watts there.;)
