Just a couple of quick questions...

I just recently got my NF7-S mobo in, installed it, and since then I've noticed a low whirring noise that comes from one of my hard drives. When the comp is first turned on, its not there, but eventually it starts up and dies and starts up and dies. Sounds just like somone snoring. Is this some kind of sign of some sort of soon to be failure?

Also, I plugged in my floppy drive and the LED is lit, but windows doesn't detect it. The only real reason I need this for is a boot disk to flash my BIOS.

Any help is appreciated.

You might have the FD cable backwards.

Check in the bois to make sure the machine sees it.

You really need to run a check on the HD.

The FDD is detected in the BIOS, just not in windows.

As for the HDD, what kind of check?

You need to run the HD utility disk to make sure the drive is working right.

So windows doesn't see it?

Are you sure the Floppy disk that you put in the drive is good?

Maybe the FDD is bad?

Have you installed the latest drivers for your motherboad?

I'm trying to install the latest BIOS, but do I not need a floppy drive to use to boot into it?

Abit says thats how I install the latest versions.

Yes you need a working floppy drive to flash the bios.

I would work on that first.

If you want to boot from the floppy, make sure you set it in the bios as the first boot device.

Yeah, its set. i'm going to try to switch it out with another one...if that doesn't work...I dunno what to do.

As for the HDD testing, Whats the HD utility disk?

I'll probably feel really stupid after you tell me, but...I dont know what you're talking about.

Say you have a Western Digital HD....You can goto the WD website and download the utility disk.

or Maxtor

or Seagate

Ok...I switched the FD with another one that I know works, and I get the same thing...

I've tried the floppy ribbon cable backwards and forwards, and I've tried switching the power connectors, and windows still doens't detect it.

My BIOS sees it, but not windows...

Also, I installed some PC3200 RAM instead of the PC2100, but mobo reports it as still 266 instead of the 400 it should be.

Should I clear the CMOS and start over?

If I clear the CMOS, will I have to reformat?

Ok, resetting the cmos helped it all. FD is detected, RAM is detected and, oddly enough, the Whirring has stopped for a while.

now its time to update the bios.

Scratch that...

After I restarted again, the RAM was detected as 266 again, and the floppy is detected by windows, but it wont detect a disk.

In the other machine, it worked fine. Now, the LED is always on and it gives me the message to insert a disk even when there's on already in it.

Sounds to me like the MB is starting to die.

Try unplugging everything except the video card and FD and see if you are having the same issue. Maybe you might beable to flash the bios.

The floppy drive itself is toast. Figger $10 for a new one.

I hope you updated the power supply with the motherboard. A weak PSU will cause all sorts of nonsense.
