I don't think so.

I wasn't really inpressed with them. I found one util in them all that I liked. And even that wasn't really worth it.

Maybe I'm insane though (the thought has crossed my mind a few times).

I'm sure insanity is a prerecqusite for any thing that is comp related
I'm just interested in having a go the main reason is that SiSoft Sandra recomended the use of it to control some things to improve system speed.

using the power tools to improve speed is not a good idea.... there are better things u can do.... like use a small batch program called "ShopVac for Windows" to clean up the registry.....delete temp files (internet files, cooies, windows\temp contents and stuff).... defrag the drives and stuff

Here is a good site to work around in. I sent you to the part about cleaning up the
regestry. After you get done with this look around for more ideas. http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/cleanup/
Also when you run clean sys directory. Watch out it wants to remove your scanner drivers. It also likes to try to remove some of nortons dll's also. Don't let it remove any with NAV at the front. That is the norton files.
I wasn't impressed with the power toys eather.
I use window washer to remove all the junk that windows likes to keep http://www.webattack.com/shareware/security/swcookie.shtml
It is shareware. give it a try. If you don't like it after 30 days delete it then.

What OS do you use? I went to 2000 pro, and then downloaded the tweak ui for 2000. Used it to do little things like speeding up menu, etc.

But they say the little things mean the most, huh?

The only PowerToys I use are Deskmenu and TweakUI. TweakUI is great for getting rid of all the little annoying things that windows likes to do, like windows animations. Deskmenu is useful for running a application shortcut that's on the desktop, buried under several open windows.

To remove items, use msconfig.

Haggis, you are using winME,,correct,,then microsoft tweakUI(user interace) is exactly what you need. yes, you can achieve the goal of removing the win98 splash screen by typing "msconfig" from RUN on the start menu and using that utility to edit system files, as muno stated. I would suggest, for an inexperienced user,to install TweakUI for achieving this end. It's much more staightforward and easier to use.

tweakUI,,although not the most recent version,is on your win98 cd. but since you are using winME, you would probably want to use the newest version 1.33, that autodetects what version of windows and internet explorer are running and adjusts accordingly.

It can be downloaded here http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

the procedure for installing tweakUI on your system is not intuitive to many users,,after you have downloaded the file, click on it and it will extract it's contents to the "c:\windows\temp" directory by default,,you can change it to any you like,it doesn't matter,,once you have extracted the files you need to locate the file called "tweakui.inf" and right click on it and choose "install",,,,

and there you go..

hope that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've got three words to describe most installs of tweakui from MS power toys -

evil registry wrecker

I played with it over a year ago and found it caused more trouble than it was worth.

If you want to change things, stay away from tweak and look for freeware on some place like http://www.nonags.com to do only the one thing you want. Tweak is like using a shotgun on your registry.

I'm fond of a little program called transparent that removes the back-ground of icon names showing the wall-paper. There's tons of stuff out there.

As for Tweak - there are tons of threads and help files out there on how to fix your system after tweak has wrecked it.... I can't recommend power toys.

Thanks for the help even though I'm now s**t scared to use the power toys so I'm not going to.

But it's alway reassuring to find that people will give advice before you go getting yourself into a whole world of trouble as far as it goes I dont think that newbie does me any justice i think the word Virgin is better.

This is to say before I go shagging my computer I think first I will give it a kiss, in the future I hope I will have the experience to try new things and if needs be at least think that I know how to fix it if things go wrong
At the moment I'm happy to bask in the abundance of knowledge that you guys have to share.

Thanks again

What pi$$es me off is none of you explained how to use msconfig or tweak ui to disable the splash screen for him! DO NOT EXPECT PEOPLE TO KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING IF YOU DON"T EXPLAIN THE PROCEDURE!

Muno, there is no reason to be scared. Tweak UI is a great utility and it should not destroy your registry, I have been useing it for a couple years with no problems. Most people do not have a problem useing Tweak UI. Even if it does it is simple to fix by typing C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SCANREG.EXE from a DOS prompt. It will restore/repair your registry.

The files that need to be changed are logo.sys and logow.sys, if you want to change it. This explains how. (http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/tune-23.shtml)

If you want to remove the splash screen then you need to do this (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/93/) .

Display the Windows Splash Screen While Loading (Windows 9x/Me)
Category: Files > MSDOS.SYS
When Windows is loading normally you see the Windows clouds splash screen, this can be disabled to show the background DOS boot process.

Change the attributes for MSDOS.SYS so it is not 'Read Only', MSDOS.SYS is found in the root directory of your C:\ drive. Open the file using Notepad or another text editor (not Microsoft Word or any word processor).

Change the value of 'Logo=' to 'Logo=1' for splash screen enabled or 'Logo=0' for disabled.

Changes will take place on the next reboot.

Hint: Pressing [Esc] while the splash screen is showing will have the same effect for that session.

Settings
Value Data: Logo=1 (default)

Try not to be pissed off Jad1097 I would have got to that soon but thx for explianing it to me your right some times other people on this site do make the mistake of thinking that people know what to do, which it's plain to see I don't but I'm not backwards in coming forwards and will tell people if I kneed to

thx to everyone who gave advice and oponions I have decided to leave it the way it is and just use [ESC]when the windows screen comes up

Soon i will build a new system and will try new things when I have a back up system to help rectify things when needed.

To the techie's some times you might have to dumb down your answers for us pain in the *** newbie's

Robin801 as long as you like to do things like that, I hope you have a ton of fun.
