How do data recovery companies get the data off a broken hard disk? I've often wondered how to get into this business and wondered what was involved.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jon

They try using advanced software first. If there's a electronic or mechanical failure, a repair is attempted. If that fails, they remove the platters and recover manually.

It's not for beginners.

What is involved...Hmmm.

Lots of money for a clean room, special machines and software, and lots and lots of time.

Why do you think it often costs $600-$1000 per drive?

Where can I buy those machines and software from?

your best bet is to go job hunting - work for a local firm for awhile and let 'em teach you what you need to know?
