I recently installed an Asus DVD-E616 dvdr drive, and after solving a common problem with it being stuck in PIO-mode (now in DMA mode), it all seemed to be working correctly, reading cds, dvds, vcds, but NOT dual-layer DVD roms :S

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

My system setup is:

Win XP Pro
Xp2400+ cpu
GF4 Ti4600
Asus A7N8X mobo
Western Digital HDD - Primary master
Western Digital HDD - Primary slave
Memorex 12 MAXX CD writer - seconday slave
Asus DVD-E616 dvd rom - secondary master

Check the Asus website and see if there is a firmware update that fixes this bug. Be careful! Don't apply new firmware unless you need it to fix an issue. Also double-check that model's specs and see if it is supposed to read that particular format.

try checkin for new firmware's at the place below.

Asus doesn't even care to post the link to the newer bios's even if they have been released.

check below

I always use the bin format since the original Asus version with their "Windows" based bios update hangs the system.

and sometimes never finds their drive itself.

Yes, I've checked the firmware and recently upgraded to version 2.2. Still wont read dual-layers dvd roms.

I'm aware of a problem now with nforce2 motherboards and 40-pin IDE ribbon cables, and suspect that this may be a factor (I use nforce2 mobo also) so I will get an 80-pin cable and see if that works.

Also - and I wonder if anyone can confirm this for me - I've heard a "rumour" that some Asus DVD-Rom drives simply do not read that kind of dvd rom, despite the specification saying otherwise. Is this true?!

they should be able to rectify that in future releases and i suppose they will.
