linux now on macs...software compatibility

I read somewhere that you can now run linux on macs...does this mean that whatever doesn't run on macs, but runs on linux will run on a linux mac? If you have a mac program, will it run in linux on a mac?? i'm so confused...

This would be better posted in the operating system spot, but I beleive the apps would have to be re-compiled with mac hardware as the target. If this is true, its not as big a deal as it sounds, because its usually possible to get the source codes for linux software.
