I would advise to disable any SMART after checking the drive. It puts a real hamper on performance.

maxblast aint doing checks..what should i use?
moreover, what should i use to make partitions in an already set-up ntfs winXP disk?
anything more natural than partition magic?

I recommend SpinRite V5 from www.grc.com

Otherwise use the HDD manufactures diagnostic disc and SCANDISK (surface scan)

For SCSI use the HBA’s media verification option.
