Ok,
Just purchased a Maxtor ATA/133 160ig HD. I have a MSI 865PE Neo2 MB with a Promrise PDC20378 ATA 133 controller chip.
I want to the new drive to be the BOOT drive and program "run" drive. I am also going to run a secondary drive off the Primary IDE(ata100) channel. This drive will be a WD 80gig ATA100.
To keep the post short, lets say "me stupid" (being safe..:))
How do I do I install the drives and install Windows XP Pro.
;)
Thanks ahead of time....:t

Remove the WD jumper if there's no slave.
Place both drives as you like and boot into BIOS setup. In the boot sequence selection, there should be a choice called "BBS-0" or similar. That's the Max on Promise. If there's nothing funny like that in your choices, select SCSI as bootable drive. De-select "boot other devices".
Boot from the CD and have the Promise floppy ready. Press F6 when you see "Setup is inspecting hardware..." and load the floppy (press S) when prompted for 3rd-party storage drivers. Continue and create/choose your partitions.
That's it, stupid. ;)

Thank you "Oh Great One"....:D
Well, I did setup it up that way. Have been waiting for the Maxtor disc copy to end...it says it will copy my old bootable drive (Windows XP Pro) to the new Maxtor drive..we will see.
One thing I noticed though. On the Maxtor HD, the jumper settings, the 3 choices are as follows:
Master
Cable Select
Slave
Question is,
If the Maxtor is the only drive on the ATA/133, what should the jumper be set on? And would I still use the Primary IDE for my second hard drive?
Remember, the primary and secondary IDE's are only ATA/100.
The MB has only one connector, for 2 ATA/133 Hd's.
Thanks again.

That ATA/100_ATA/133 stuff means nothing. Forget about that.
If you are copying a drive with XP on it that was not on a Promise RAID controller before, it will not boot. I guarantee that it won't work. You're going to have to reinstall XP. :(

Do what BipolarBill said.
Yes you can use the Primary IDE for your second drive.
Just make sure you set the Bios to boot SCSI first.
Then make sure you hit F6 durning setup when it asks you if you want to install other devices.

Well SH*&, now I am confused.
I am now back on my PC, running Windows XP that was copied over from my Western Digital.
I have set the boot dixk to be the Maxtor and IT WORKS...
I guess it does not matter that much about asigned drive letters.
Like now my boot drive is G:. all desktop icons now reflect that change.
Bill, the hard drive with the copied XP is up and running. No problem at all on the first boot, it did say new drive found and it asked to re-start which I did. So here I am, now running the copied HD.
:D

Is it on the Promise or the standard IDE ports?

The new drive is on the Promise.
It was copied over on the IDE.
It is now on the Promise, alone. With the original HD on the Primary as a master.
In the Bios, bootup set to floppy first, the BBS-0 second, and the CD rom 3rd.
I am going to unplug the primary master HD and then see if it boots. Just to make sure it is booting from the new Maxtor HD.
Oh, I did use the Windows XP Max Blast 3 program to copy the WD HD, I used the DOS version of Max Blast 3. If that makes any difference.
And I unplugged the WD HD, and the sysytem boots up fine.
Now, how can I re-assign Drive letters, like the boot HD to C: instead of G:, etc...
Do I use Disk Manager in XP for that or unplug all of the others and install one at a time?
Thanks
