Office 97 app crashes

Excel, Word, Wordpad in Office97 (SR2-b) keep crashing just over the last week or so...

First signs were corruption of an 80-page word doc (lots of hyperlinks and bookmarks) which kept crashing Word, but that crashed on other PCs too, incl. XP and took an NT machine down

That (I think) rules out Win 2k PC fault - other programs are fine (SPSS quite demanding app seems ok)...

So, I wondered corrupt normal template...? Still crasjing this weekednd and now excel and wordpad..!! So, uninstalled and reinstalled all office... no good

I don't understand the Dr Watson log, but it's always
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation), irrespective of the app.
Could post more if it would help... notepad seems stable enough (so far!)
I'll check out MS Knowledged base, too

Uninstall Office, then run OffClean97. Then reinstall Office97.

I think this was profile corruption...
Checked my 'Administrator' profile and a couple others - all ok, so deleted my usual profile then added it back in... seems good now.

It's left me with another minor problem though...

I was doing this while working on something else, and forgot to back up Profile folder and sub-directory before logging off / re-starting, so Documents and Settings/ProfileName folder has gone, taking my e-mails.. with it!! (documents are elsewhere - I'd have thought of that..!)

I think I read somewhere that unless a hard drive is really wiped clean /re-formatted, all the data is still there in some form... any chance I can recover the lost e-mails..?
