Is it possible to sye up RAid 0 with two wd se 80mgigers striped, then backed up simultaneously to a 160 gig 8 meg cache maxtor?
Realize the differing brands shouldn't matter, but I just belive I'm better off mirored to full sized partitioned mirroer drive, as opposed to 2 separate 80 gigers.
Any definitive experience?
Thanx in advance, wil be on an xp os nf2 aiw eqquipped mobo. Whther separate or onoard built in raid controller.

Storing parity data from a striped set to a single drive is the definition of RAID 5. The controller must be designed for that, unfortunately.

You can run Raid 0+1 with 4 80gb drives though. ;)
Really though it is better to run raid 5 (Stripe with Parody) that way if any of the drives fail then you can rebuild the array and not loose any data.

Maybe Ankerson is just making a mockary of RAID?
hehehe

hey i moved, took a trip, never left the farm...thx, didn't know where to post.
Thx all who replied, i gather that raid5 is 4 80 gigs, and a fifth 160 as a backup to the two mirrored drives?
And Bill, with which controller would I find said feature. Definitely new to this raid, bought and read, searched numerous resources to get some understanding. Tecnically then, any nf2 board with native raid CANNOT mirror the two striped 8's on single 160- would dictate 2 more preferably identical 80's? Was considring two new maxtor 80-8mb cache to play with existing pair 80 gig wd se's. And which, if any nf2 offerings include (preferably IDE) on board raid, esp if can do 5? Have good firewire, just need usb2, orig. nvsound, lan (gig etheryet?) picture optional.
.....so we grinned and we smiled and we smiled while we grinned, sitting on that sack o' seed! never mind, real oldie goldie-mebe I'll share the rabbit tune.

RAID 5 can be done with 2 striped drives and a parity drive. The controller must support RAID 5. 3Ware has the best IDE RAID controllers.
Promise onboard controllers cannot even combine 0+1. Highpoint controllers can. That requires 4 drives.
Few, if any, motherboards have Highpoint RAID controllers onboard. Most have SATA which only supports two drives.

Personally Id go with raid 1+0 - its more resilient than raid 0+1.

True, my Abit VP6 has a Highpoint IDE raid controller onboard and it will do Raid 0+1.....but then that is IDE raid...

Raid 5 is the best because it is stripping with parity across all the drives.
That way if one drive goes bad then you can replace it and rebuild the drive that was lost.
And if you have a hot spare....the raid controller will rebuild it automaticly...:D

Thx again all who replied, however original question remains, does the backup array have to be two separate, identical drives, or can one use a double capacity equal speed for the mirroring?
BTW don't mind the stripper satire, I find it ironic that one can be very punny, and sometimes rather innocently. Serendipity rules...pardon me ma'am, your freudian slip is showin...

You can't mirror a RAID 0 array to a single drive. It has to be another RAID 0 array of similar size and performance. This is called RAID 0+1.
What you may be thinking of is 3-drive RAID 5. You need a controller that supports RAID 5 for this.
