It's not a problem unless you think it is.

The MSI reads the CPU temp from a sensor in the CPU itself. The others use a diode in the socket. The CPU reading is always higher, but it's accurate. When the others say 80C, the CPU is actually over spec and in the danger zone.

Update your bios, then it'll lie to you and tell you it's running cooler so you won't worry.

What a true and utterly hilarious way of putting that. Thanks for the laugh, I needed one! :D

Yea, I remember reading about that now. There was something wrong with the older BIOS versions. It was misreporting CPU speeds and temps. I've been watching that board for months now-does it seem like a nice, fast board?

ok got an updated bios. the bios shows temps in the low 30's.
now in windows it shows the same temp off the h/w monitor.
how accurate are these temps?

They're artificially low. They were right before. :p

so if my temps are actually "high"? and my system "is" lying how do i get my temps down?

In the usual ways - a better heatsink/fan and better case ventilation.

I have the same board, running a 3200 xp, updated bios, stock cpu fan, 2 case fans and 512m corsair 3200 xms, ti 4200 vid, max 120 gig hd & raptor 36 gig sata, 450 watt psu, dvd and cdrw.

all that hardware in the case and temps always in the 34 to 46 c range, even under a load.

if it's lying, then i gonna be dying!
