Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Pentium 5 and 6?!?
A new guy at work claims that a local store not only wants to sell him a Pentium 5, but they showed him the chip and told him the P6's were on the way soon. He says that the P5s came out last year to replace the P4. Now, either he's crazy or I am... Didn't the P4's only come out last fall? Of course, this is the same guy who claims Warcraft 3 has been out since last year, that 80 minute CD-Rs are illegal, and that a six meg MP3 can be run through Winzip to fit on a floppy... Is there any truth to any of this? It's driving me nuts wanting to argue with this guy, but just about everything he says sounds like a distant rumour.

LOL, that guy is so full of *****... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Well.. Intel webpage doesn't even know how to count to 5. There's no such thing. Perhaps they were really talking 'bout amd k5 =) Here in finland people sell all the time processors like 'Pentium 500MHz AMD' =)
Seems that the guy doesn't know anything about computers or related. Tell him to stick with knitting =)

well i really doubt that guys info is correct... but i remember my friends computer had windows 98 way before it came out
The case is alot different with software as you can d/l those from umf. places. But to acquire hardware that is not out in the market... That's way harder.

Get a photo of it and post it, he's probaly just confused and wanted to sound like he knows what he's talkin about, He's probaly confused the 'P5' with the current P4 and the 'P6' with the newer version of the P4 being released later this fall. Some local comp techs who work in little buisnesses seem to really over-compensate with BS. I needed a floppy drive late last year and overheard one of the salesman saying " No worries, this 32mb 3D accelerater will keep your kids on those games for ages". He was talkin about a M64, I also saw a blue lightning streak with 'PCI' on it.... Nothing against all computer tech's like that as I know a few that are genuinely good.

heh heh stupid people make me laugh.
Does he even know what an mp3 is? It is a compressed wav file. If he tries to compress it again it won't do much.

Warthog,
If you can (it's very possible) compress a mp3 with eg. winzip then you've done something very wrong with the mp3codec (it sucks). Just to know that it is possible to compress mp3 into a lot smaller, under certain conditions.

He my have been talking about code names. The 6 would be generation not the real name. If that was the case it would be as follows.
P5: Pentium 66MHz, Socket 4, 5v
P6: Pentium Pro, Socket 8
If this is the case (old Tech.)it is A ripoff. If he wasn't talking about code names brain dead.
FYI Intel announced the P5 10/19/1992,P6 realsed 11/1995

bahahahaha. thats great. sigh thanxs for the laugh. 80 minutes cd illegal? man i hope this guy don't work on computers. Give me his number so i can have a chat with the man. JacobM5727 its possible to get software before it comes out but its most likely warez. I remeber a month ago and saw that the new tool cd was out before it even hit the shelf a couple of days ago. pretty interesting

Thank you, I was worried about my sanity there. I'm thinking maybe he's counting the Celeron line as Pentium chips. Oh yeah, he also told me he overclocked his CD burner by opening it up and playing with some jumpers but he can't figure out why it won't work anymore, and that he has a program to make exact copies of DVDs with his CD-R drive. He also says that playing a movie in a DVD drive on a computer caused the laser to re-align, so that it won't read anything but movies. All I can do is shake my head...
Yep, ask him what drugs does he use, and be sure to tell me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Roflol, I wonder if he knows the guy I used to live next door to. Lol, i remeber the time he told me that you can't install win. 98 by it's self, it had to be installed over a machine that had win. 95. he said thats why it's called a upgrade. other wise you had to have the full version. Heheh, I went home and poped a 800MB drive in my 486 {at the time} invited him over and procided show him a clean install. lol he still didn't belive all I need was my old 3.11 disks to do it. and the time he told me that my JD4620 turbo didn't have powershift, that tractors didn't have such a thing. roflol...
God now today he told me that his copy of Windows 98 runs ontop of dos 4.x, not the dos 7.x that I've been aware of. Dos 7.0 won't be available until Windoes XP is released don't ya know. And he can't figure out why his system is so unstable... Oh yeah, Doom (Yep, the old game) apparently wrecked his system (How, I'll never know), and he told my brother that the new Star Trek series is due to air (Not tape, air) the week after Voyager ends. Where does this guy get his info...

LOL this guy sounds like my 11 year old loser brother http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif talking about computers. Were did this guy even get a copy of DOS 4.x? DOS 7.x came with windows95. Next time you see(if you go in his store or whatever)check if he is leaning against something. Then ask him to follow you to the door. I'll bet you'll have a good laugh as he falls over and takes down half of the displays. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

That sounds like a guy in the electronics 2 class I know. He was trying to agrue with me that screen res didnt effect the systems speed, in Half Life! His claim was that all the res does is make the screen smaller or bigger. I asked him how got into electronics at all he shook his head and continued to play half life. (I found out later that his dad is the welding instructor at the same school)
Eli, you ought to email a link to this thread to that hot air bag! That is if he could figure out how to use it!!

Hate to burst any bubbles...but I've been running a P6 3gb cpu for a couple of months now. Coupled with the 6gb of 400mhz XDRam it's pretty neat. Of course you pretty much have to utilize the new Western Digital 1000GB SCSI FatBoy hard drive to take advantage of all that power..."The Truth Is Out There" And when I wake up...

Eli - DOS7 is an IBM product....It's been out for years....
MS stopped developing DOS at version 6.22 which is actually a down-grade from DOS6 caused by legal copy-right challenges in court.
Enterprise - the new Star-trek series is due to air this fall - with Mr. Quantum Leap as the captain........
So much for processor versions..... I'm looking for the demise of disk hard drives next myself - I think with MRAM coming out in the next few years, that spinning hard drives will be a thing of the past and RAM solid state drives will be it - say, - 4 or 5 years from now.... No moving parts except the cooling fans which they may do away with as well....
Axel, next time you boot from a win9x floppy check the dos version. It is 7.something. Regardless, it's definitely not the 4.x that my new co-worker claims it is.
Oh and last I heard Scott Bacula (That spelling is probably wrong) was just rumoured to be the captain on Enterprise. Still, Sam would make a good captain. Maybe Al will show up. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Has anyone ever heard of Windows XP being called Windows 2000 2? Just another bit of "knowledge" I aquired today.

A P5 is possible but not the P6, some times Intel lets out development CPU's to very Large OEM's so the can try them out, Beta versions is best way of discribing them, after the RD have had them and found bugs etc, they reprot back o Intel, then get a updated pre release CPU.
When the P3 was still awaiting release some OEM's in NZ had installed and sold some of these Beta chip's needless to say it cost them, when the systems came back crashing all the time, also some were escapees from one of the Asian factories that were producing them ( Intel like to have a reasonable stock before mass release)

The P5 is not even a remote possibility, less long the P6. My latest "obtained" Intel tech documents don't even hint towards a Pentium V class processor within the next two years. As for development of a P-V, if it existed, I am usually one of the first to know about research projects outside of Intel's own R&D staff.
The P4 is the only mainstream x86 32-bit architecture that Intel is currently developing, as this core is still in its infancy in terms of its overall product lifespan.
Catch ya' later,

Hey listen to the guy, he is "in the know"
And those geforce8's are looking pretty hot...
Hmmm...well, I don't know...P5 and P6...could be...but I'm surprised I don't have them yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
I have quite a few "Intel Confidential" CPU's and "Intel Secret" motherboards around here. ( In fact I had a P3 500 just shortly after the P2 450 came out... )
Of course these are all due to my company being sent test eval equipment from HP.
ELI...you are correct, DOS 7 is what Win9x dos reports from the ver command...but IBM does market PD-DOS 7, even 7.5 ( Ghost server uses it to make boot floppies on ).
And, for P5...what is the next 64 bit Pentium processor going to be? Heck, they might name the 2.0GB P4 as a P5 and then name the 64 bit CPU P6...you never know for sure...but it just may happen, so never say never.

actually the p1 is a pentium of the fifth generation
and the p2 is from the 6th generation
so maybe its that or he is really stupid
ho and btw the new processor wont even be called pentium so this mguy is swiming in the mud
whoa he has a copy of dos 4.x i though ms reclaimed all of those since they were so buggy
BBA, thank you for the confirmation sir. I suppose I should have said MS-DOS, but who adds the MS anymore? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
This guy seriously thinks there are Pentium 5 chips on the market, and he doesn't mean "fifth generation" P5. Most of the things he says just leaves me shaking my head. Either that or the store he frequents are really confused or trying to rip him off. Perhaps I should go and inquire about these new processors... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Go to the store and have a look at what he thinks is a P5-P6. Hell he could be so confused that he's thinking of the T-bird as the P5 and the Palomino as the P6. I'm kinda curious just what he could be thinking of. Actually, ask him what clock-speed they're at, that should narrow it down a bit.

The resurrection of the bogus Nostradamus... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I was wondering about the clock rate myself... Figure a Pentium 5 would be at least a couple of gig. Apparently the guy who works at the store told him it's a Pentium 5. It's a hard topic to bring up without arguing with him about something.
Today he told me that blank lines in your "configuration file" (config.sys perhaps?) cause massive delays during a boot. He needed to take the system to a store to get the lines removed, and speed up his boot time. Surely they removed something other than blank lines...

Yea, its called Enterprise and they have commercials saying that it is due out this fall.
Could the salesperson have touched 1 too many powered up computers and fried his memory?
Probably thinks that would be the safest way to remove parts. No static, since the power supply would be absorbing it.
lol
Even when I built my first computer, not a clue what I was doing, it was idiot proof. Can't put an AGP card in a PCI or ISA.
Hardest part for me was figuring out the system bios. Took an hour. Built a celeron slot1 on an Abit BH6.

I can comment on the Pentium confusion, I think:
The P54C was the Pentium 200 MMX core, while the P6 was the Pentium Pro core. The Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III (Klamath) and Pentium III (Coppermine) were ALL based on the P6 core.
So, someone that was confused might refer to the Pentium MMX as a P5 and a Pentium III as a P6.
There are certainly no Pentium 5 designs being taped out right now. Between Socket478, Itanium, and McKinley, I think Intel has all the CPU's it can handle to deal with.
Yes we all know about Enterprise, but this gentleman "assured" me that it was airing (Not filming, airing) the week after Voyager ended. Must've missed the premiere eh? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Here's a new one, which relates to the dos 4 thing. Now keep in mind that he considers himself to be an advanced user. I gave him a W98 boot disk which I added sys.com to (I couldn't remember if it was in the ram drive or not, so this was idiotproof). I told him to boot from the floppy, go to an a: prompt, and type "sys c:" to restore the proper dos version to his system. He looked at me with a blank expression and asked how he boots from a floppy! Oh wow... And to think I was going to see if he wanted to look at this Unix server I've been slaving over. Even my brother knows how to boot from a floppy, and he's the guy who said he thought video cards should plug into the PS/2 connector. I get headaches thinking about that one. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

dont tell me he build computer withouth knowing how 2 boot with a boot disk
bekuzz i might cry
does he know how to create a active partition to boot windows (no this is 2 easy)
(this one is harder): does he know how 2 put a cd on a cd-rom ?
Well as a matter of fact he did find new ways to screw up his CD and DVD drives as I mentioned earlier... lol
