Hi, I have a new windows xp computer dialing out to a windows 98 computer setup as a dial up server with a printer connected. When I dial up I get asked for a User name and password. If I just enter the computer name without the password it says unable to connect you must enter user name and password. (no password has been set). I installed dial up networking on a Win 98 computer and the screen to connect appears with the computer name and I leave the password box blank and I am able to connect and see the printer. I have checked the Workgroup name and it is correct (same on XP box and Win98). I have tried using the same user name as on the Win 98 box but still no joy. Any Ideas????

We have a Networking forum, you know.

You can't use Win98 as a RAS server. Are you referring to Internet Connection Sharing? Are you connected to the Win98 PC via a local network over Ethernet?

Enable LCP extensions on the xp dialup connectoid and make sure
type of dial up server is set as ppp/win95/98.

I'd add in netbuie as a protocol , client for microsoft networks and possibly file and print sharing.

Oh! I thought he was dialing into a Win98 PC and having the Win98 PC dial out again.

I need more coffee... :r

Both the Windows XP and the Windows 98 computers have modems connected and the Windows XP is dialing in to the Windows 98 pc as it is set up as a dial in server. No cables or Internet connection sharing involved.
I tried installing NETBeui on the Win XP computer but it made no difference.

The dialer in the connecting PC must be configured for the same security protocols as the server - either PPP or SLP. The username and password must be the same as what you use to log into Win98 with.
