Microsoft's Conxion server is ridiculously fast. So are Netscape's ftp servers... 20MB from there in seconds.

Yeh it ain't just cable that benefits from microsofts webserver, I had a sustained 7kb/s download of DX8 on my 56k modem. Closest thing I've ever had was d/ling from my ISP which was 6.1kb/s.

yes cable is very good and fast overall I feel its faster then dsl.

The only drawback to it is that you sometimes will have downtimes and be very slow during the busy hours.

Not universally true. It's completely dependent on your cable service company. I can honestly say I don't EVER notice a slowdown during peak times.* And my downtime has totalled maybe two days in over a year and a half. I've never even heard of any DSL company being as reliable.

*if specifically benchmarking for speed then I can see the difference in peak/off-peak time. For example my max downstream speed during off-peak hours averages 750K-1.2MB/sec and during peak hours I see 300K-500K/sec. BTW, those are capital "K"s, meaning bytes, not bits/sec. For the same price DSL can't even touch my cable's slowest speed and DSL can only dream of competing with a cable modem's fastest throughput.

I have cable from UPC/Chello and the fastest download of one file I get is 140-150 Kilobytes per second. Combined I've gotten over the 200 Kilobytes per second.

I used bART (a local cable ISP) until Chello bought it up. Speed has increased (tripled) and PING went down, but reliability went down the drain. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I've noticed that Apple's site is REALLY fast. Downloading Quicktime movie player (about 5Mb) took me less than half a minute to download.

I am using Essent@Home. Since Oct, it has been down for 1 whole day and a few hours on another. I do notice some slowdown during peak hours, but I notice more slowdown due to busy sites than the cable bandwidth itself.

I'd have to agree with Outpatient, I don't notice any slowdowns during peak times, and outages are very rare.
I average 500KB/sec downloads. DSL can't touch that.

well I'm glad to see most prefer cable to DSL 8) that will keep me in a job a bit longer, being I install Road Runner.

btw I live in Fl and D/l 10mbs from a NC server in less than 40 secs.. also just d/led the half life patch so i can reinstall it , I found it on a fast server well its over 50mbs and I D/led it in just under 5 mins.

just wish I could get the T-1 - T-3 Upload speeds then I'd be really Happy 8)

crocket...

what do you know about peak time speed and downtime in the oviedo, fl area? One of my friends got cable because his dad didn't like how almost all DSL service use 1 year contracts, but they ended up getting dsl anyway because during peak times his old dusty 28.8 was faster than his cable

August i should be able to get DSL (Of course the DSL provider has been misleading me for a year already)

prexaspes - how did you get 10.9 sustained?
56,000bps -->53,000 bps(line restriction) -->53,000/8 = 6625 = ~6.5Kb/sec TOP SPEED FOR 56K MODEM

benchristian...

I'm not 100% on your friend's problem, because it could be a number of things... #1 would be how many people are in his node ... I'm guessing not a lot..being I think oviedo is not a major city so that should not be a problem. I'm guessing it's probally bad cable or possibly a bad modem... did he ever call in for a service call?

thats where I would suggest he start...tell him to tell the cable company he wants his drop(line to the house) replaced and maybe even his cable in the house... if the cable guy was lazy and didn't run new stuff that could be the problem.

I live in a rural area of Indiana so I have no choices and am THRILLED to have adsl. Mine is through tctc.com a subsidiary of TDS.net. They use a system by Elastic Networks which has some type of new adsl setup. Anyway it has a maximum throughput of 1500K and the best D/L speed I've ever gotten is 150K per sec. These speeds are largely dependant on the server/bandwidth on the other end. It is VERY reliable and was a breeze to set up. I got Netscape 4.75 [23mb] in about 4 minutes.

I have been using Charter cable for about 2 years and would not trade it for the world. My nephew has dsl and he tells me that my cable is twice as fast. Charter just upgraded our system to Fiber to the curb. and 82mm line to the houses. My speed is any where from 400 kb to 2.6m dependent on the time of day or the site I am visiting. My upload speed has been around 384kb In my opionion cable rocks.

I'm extremely happy with my cable too. Reliable, fast and fast too. No noticeable slowdown during peak hours, and the webspace deal is the best out there. 7 email accounts with 10 megs of webspace each.

I lost my cable once due to a move. That will NOT happen again.

I had a quick question for some of you folx. I think the max rate I've ever hit was in the low 40KB/sec. I went to Tweak3D's site and tweaked my connection for gaming. Is there anything I could have done there that would have slowed down or limited my average up/down load rates?

I'd sure like to hit 3 digit transfer rates some day. (Course with Q2 ping times of as low as 23ms on a nonlocal server I'm not complaining too loudly! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

I've got AT&T @HOME in the SF Bay area. I typically see about 1-3Mbits/sec on the downlink. Unfortunately they lock the uplink at 128Kbits/s. Still.... that's a dramatic increase over 56K.

The service is fairly reliable. I don't keep track of the downtimes, but it's probably been down less than a week over the past ~1 year that I've had it.

Where i live everyone had RoadRunner. We have way too many users and i think we need another backbone. My friend gets a call from them everyday, complaining becuase he transfers over 1.5 gigs a day

I guess it really all depends on your Internet Cable provider. Up here in Canada, cable in our city isn't as reliable as it should be. Chances are 50/50 there will be downtimes at least once a week. Doesn't sound that reliable to me.

I have tried DSL and must say its performance isn't great and and when I use it it doesn't give me that *wow factor* I'm looking for, as when I use cable.

If only cable were more reliable or we get more competition, ie - more cable providers, then I'd jump the gun from 56k to cable.

Don't do much downloading anyhow, so speed isn't all that important. Just gotta wait till the right time to jump ship, that's all.

I use to have DSL in Indiana and was very happy with the 80-90Kbyte/sec we use to get there. Then I moved out here to Seattle a few weeks ago and was pleasantly suprised to be getting 300-400Kbyte/sec. It all depends on where I am downloading from.

The only thing I don't like about this cable is the capped 15Kbyte/sec upstream. I do miss the 40Kbyte upstream of my DSL. Oh well.

I don't know which I would rather have though. I'd be happy with the solid DSL I had previously or the cable I have now.

Maybe I should post this elsewhere but does anyone have any info on satalite ISP providers? Cost? Availability? Speeds? My wife and I live out in the boonies and the nearest Dialup ISP is long distance (forget about Cable modem or DSL) Any info would be appreciated. Feel free to email me if you have any suggestions. -Raist

Hey Raist, Me and my brother got a DirectPC Satellite connection. The only thing was though, is that it was one way-download. What I mean is you have to have a local ISP to connect to for uploading. SO we were paying $12 dollars a month for local ISP and $40 dollars on top of that for the SAT. I could get a constant 50kb/sec on it though, but ping times were horrible-like 500ms.
DirectPC has a Two-Way satellite availible now with an upload speed speed of 128k. But it is about $60 - $80 dollars. Check out http://www.directpc.com

Even though I am love the speed, I am getting rid of it in favor of DSL..... Cable in my area is NOT very reliable, and it gets really annoying when I am hosting a website and LOTS of files, so I am moving to DSL.....

My Cox modem cable, starts at over 400 kbs then gradually but quickly slows down to a crawl, 4-5 kbs. Mainly when downloading internationally. Cox checks my connection and found no problem. Is this typical for international downloads?

I average about 600-800 K/s.
My brother used to work for a subcontractor installing the modems.
He gave me some "amp" or "booster" if you will. He said it should amplify the connection even more.I guess they used them when the connections werent as fast as they should have been or when they had to run long legths of cable.
Im going to try it as soon as I get a chance to. Ill let ya know if it does anything.

Whats wierd about it, is that one connection off the amp, is plugged into the wall socket using coax and an adapter...hmmm wierd

Wow, Missing the Point that is like 26Mb/s!! How do you connect to the cable, I thought 10BaseTX was the standard, ie 10 Mb/s? I'm losing my cable soon, tho moving to Northern Alabama, any suggestions of a good DSL provider? I'm thinking DSL for flexible service.
