I hope this isn't the wrong place to be asking this but I'm looking to buy a good, dependable internal (maybe even external) DVD burner and I don't exactly know what specs to look for or much about reliable brands. I also saw recently that DVD's come in different "classes" DVD9 and 10 that can burn both sides and hold 10G? Do you need a special burner for that or is it the medium that is the difference? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!:t

That's called DVD Ram. And the new Pioneer drive supports burning DVD RAM.
Just goto their website and look at the specs.

DVD-RAM is more of a specialty format, most home users won't need or make use of it. I hear good things about the Sony 500 and 510 models.

I agree with sm8000. The Sony 510a is probably the most bang for the buck. It is capable of writing both DVD+/-RW formats, which is a big plus with the lack of an industry standard. I have a NEC ND-1100A DVD+RW and I have been very happy with it so far, but it would be nice to have the piece of mind knowing both formats are usable.
