Hey, guys!
I have bought Rise of Nations and I can't play it. Because I can't even see the game menu. My monitor goes black out on me after the starting cinematics. I was using 800x600 then. After that, I CTRL-ALT-DEL to remove the blackness. I changed my resolution to 1024x768 and I found out that my monitor can't use it. What's going on?
I could play Splinter Cell and Generals at 800x600 but I could not play Rise of Nations.
I can't even use 1024x768. Oh man! I was planning to buy Vietcong but I'm too scared to find out whether I will face the problem or not.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!
Man!! how old is your MONITOR?
i have an awesome old Acer VGA that maxes out at 640x480 but the color was simply sooooooo amazing, no new monitor has been able to match it so far
So i only use it to watch TV on PC (tv tuner)
then i also have a 2nd ancient, from NEC it maxes out at 800x600 quality is OK
Seems like your monitor can't do 1024x748 dude
time to buy a new monitor
:t
So it's the monitor problem and not my video card, huh?

Unless you have the refresh rate set too high for your monitor in 1024/768. You could try lowering it to like 60H just to see if it will work.
No problem, guys! I'll give it a shot.

aren't you saying your system hangs at that point?
if that's the case I'd suspect the video card and/or drivers before blaming the monitor
here (http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/support_videocards.asp) is the MS page addressing video card issues - you might try there also :t
Well! I can't even change to 1024x768 resolution on Windows. I think the game menu uses that resolution and my Windows' refresh rate is set at 85Hz and not 72Hz. I can only use 800x600 resolution with that high refresh rate.
Just now, I tried out the different rates and found out that 1024x768 can 'survive' at 72Hz but I need to adjust my monitor view immediately. The whole screen goes to the right and I have to re-adjust the viewing scale. Troublesome!
I have a few refresh rates to choose from. They're 60Hz, 65Hz, 70Hz, 72Hz, 75Hz and 85Hz.

ok, so you had one of the 2nd bunch of SVGA monitor that came after right at the end of the 800x600 era
or in another words, you just have a low quality SVGA monitor :p
Try to get a new monitor, if you can spare the money
:t
Whew! Thanks for all your help! If you all didn't ask me to check the refresh rates, I think I will change the graphics card for sure.
Thanks again!
