Hello,
My mom has a Compaq 715US laptop and the joints where the screen attaches to the base is very loose (it kinda flops around if you don't balance it). Is this normal? Is there a way to fix it? I'm a few months outside of the 1 year warranty.
Thanks,
Richard

That's a friction hinge. It will be costly to repair. :(

How costly are we talking about? You think I could talk Compaq into a freebie since I'm only about 3 months out of warranty?
Thanks,
Richard-who told his mom to get the extended warranty for a laptop but was not listened to.

As a temporary fix, duct tape can keep it at a fix poistion and from that position, closable too;)
A friend of mine messed up his LCD laptop screen and it cost $1000 to repair (Compaq) and it was a day out of warranty. I advised him to build a desktop instead and he was stubborn but now he is upset that he didn't ditch it then.

I've seen a lot of broken hinges. they are NEVER covered by warranty since the damage is "normal wear".
I can't even get compaq hinge parts to order. I even called Compaq support for a part number. Some guy in India answered. it was just bizarre. :p

Me too especially compaqs - The problem with laptops is you really need to be an electronics test engineer and have all the right test tools , oscilloscopes ...........and screwdrivers etc
:D
Do you have anyone that can repair laptops? Ask for a favour! Maybe they can help you! It's better than paying a huge sum of money to repair that small thing.

Ebay would have this part? What is it even called? Could I fix it myself (I'm handy with a desktop but have never messed with a laptop)? Maybe I'll just try to find some small, local computer fixing shops and see if they can do it.

No look for guys selling the laptops themselves either broken or spare parts - alternatively check your local pc exchange shop - we have ones in Glasgow and Edinburgh selling everything from old psu's for out of date printers - Its a good way to avoid the landfill site and still make a bit of money out of old kit.
Perhaps a business idea if you're feeling up to it and you dont have them in the states - Companies usually pay to have their old kit removed!!!
Strange but true!!!

Does anyone at least know how to take the monitor off of the base? I have a feeling if I do this I could make a fix.

Usually in older compaqs, the ones with friction controlled LCDs, the hing woul have two black covers that were removable to expose two or more screws. those screws used to seperate the LCD from the Base itslef. If you went on ebay anf found anexact match with a working LCD, you could attmept this.
Of all laptops, I have found Dell to be the most easy to take apart

I took the GED test on a HP Laptop and the screen was so wobbly. I was thinkig was this caused by peope shuting it and opening it too much or slaming it or what?
