Sony Burner (http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11218807&m=488&cat=511&scat=514)

Seems pretty good eh?

Here's a little lesson, been meaning to put this into the forum for those who don't know. (also it's time to kill the speed myth)

"There is very little difference between DVD-R and DVD+R. They are used in exactly the same way. But you have to be careful with DVD-R because there are two standards for blank disks. The one to use is marked "DVD-R for General Use." The other is marked "DVD-R for Authoring," and it only works for mastering DVD video or data because its composition is different. This sort of DVD-R is not usually available to the general public."

"[DVD] Write speed in +R and +RW mode is 2.4x, i.e. 3.324 MB/s." -Philips DVDRW228
CD-R Write speed at 48x 7200 KB/s

"*In referance to DVD* 4x, i.e., 5.54 MB/s in DVD-R mode and 2x (2.77 MB/s) in DVD-RW mode." - Pioneer DVR-A05
Once again CD-R Write speed at 48x 7200 KB/s

"Never has the quality of blank disks been more important. No-name disks from Asia may cut prices, but above all, they cut quality. DVD recording absolutely must be done on good quality disks, and this means branded ones. "

- from Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20030207/dvd_burner-10.html)

"15 minutes to fully record a high-speed 4.7 GB DVD-R" -Pioneer DVR-A05

- from Pioneer (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/Industrial/IndustrialProductDetails/0,1444,92281,00.html)

I just hope I never see another post saying wait untill DVD burners get faster.

Peace out yo :t

Yeah, but get the Sony DW-U10A from New Egg. Newer version of the same drive, and cheaper than Best Buy. $280, I'd be tempted to get one myself if I had more money.

In the specs on that Sony drive, The system requirements include 1 gig of hard drive space...why would it require that much space....I'm guessing that that space is a buffer of some sort becasue most burning software does not take up that much space and I've never seen a driver that went above 20 megs...

Yeah, it's gotta be for buffer space. No way they could have a full gig of software, but that's a reasonable amount of buffer space for a DVD.

It seems that the DR-U510A (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=INa0pHxHLGG0h0KoQi6-rzNX_N6I5RYDAZI=?CatalogCategoryID=eVkKC0%2eNNpEAA AD1EqgpDdUY&ProductID=CeoKC0%2eNmBMAAAD1u7MpDdUc&Dept=cpu) is sony's newest drive, it just that the only sell the DW-U10A on newegg.

At least that's what I see here. Where did you see it's the newer version of this drive?

My mistake, the DW-U10A is the "Replacement of DRU-500A" according to the product descriptions on New Egg. According to the Sony Style page it doesn't exist.

It appears the DW-U10A and the DR-U510A are the same drive, and that Sony decided for some unknown reason to use different model numbers for the OEM and retail versions.

DVD writeable will soon start to phase out when Blu-ray enters the market. Just about a year and a half I believe.
Meanwhile CD-R fits all my needs :)

I don't really prescribe to the "wait for x" line of thinking with this stuff. If you wait for 6 months for something, there'll be something else to wait 6 months for once you get there. If you need it and want it, and can afford it, go for it, if it's a good product. There will always be a cheaper, better, faster one in 6 months.

I'm really likin that Sony drive, it's the afford it part I'm having trouble with, well, and I don't really need it either. :D
CD-R's good enough fer me too. :t

i certainly wont pay $600 bucks to get a DVD RW now so then 6 mth down the road something better is out and the DVD RW is dirt cheap down to $100

that's exactely what happend to the CDR then same with CDRW drives

both time i got burned :p

CDR 1x the first kind that came out $1000

then CDRW first batch that game out $700

this time, NOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY..... :p not gonna fall for that one again

just gonna sit tight and wait for prices to plunge and wait for the next get to come out

oh yeah same **** with the Video cards and the Zip Drives, then Jaz Drives, then etc etc etc

yikes..... :x too tired of chasing new teknos

why not wait for sometime...i bought my Yamaha 8x8x24x cdrw way back in 2000 for 120$ and in just one or 2 years the prices went down so much at that price i could have bought a quality Memory stick and a CDRW right now also the speeds climbed like everest.

though the drive is dead right now..i did better wait for a year or 2 when better speeds comes by and prices fall to some acceptable limits.
