Atlast somethin is happennin at this part of the world....i thought i would never get to c

broadband in my whole life span.

I have a DSL connection back home in Redwood Shores,CA but have never got the chance to work

on it.

For the first time in India( Bombay to be precise)where i am studyin now(still one more year

to go and then i will be back in US).....i gettin a 128Kbps wireless internet

Connection....that too very very cheap.

its costing around 800Rs(thats 400Rs/month roughly around 9$ in US) per 2 months and there

is a 1.5GB download limit:mad: (yeah thats what i didn't like about it).

I am using a 56Kbps dialup now...should be faster than that i think.

My service provider Sify Broadband (http://broadband.sify.com) says he can give a 512kbps but then will charge about 25$ as well as the

download limit goes down to 500Mb.

I have said 128Kbps is sufficent at the moment though.

is this a good deal?

A good deal? Not by US standards. Most broadband ISPs offer unlmited downloads for about $45/mo.

I would be willing to go for that deal at $25 a month. I can not get Cable or DSL where I live. (I am in the US about 20 miles from a large capitol city and they simply skipped my town when upgrading equipment. We do not support either.) I can only use Dial-Up which is $9.95 a month. Anything would be better thatn what I have now. :)

I looked at satellite internet but thew equipment is almost $1000.00 for a decent monthly rate. But then again the rate is $80. :(

Remember to secure your connection with encryption etc... to help protect yourself.

yeah i know my dad out there in SF says its nothin but cheap but not good.

He has unlimited dsl at his house in Redwood shores for 45$...dunno the speed though but he says its pretty fast.

British Gas is also going to start one, they charge around 5000Rs/year (about 110$ for 128Kbps and about 300$ for 512kbps) with unlimited downloads thats a nice deal for a year...what i don't understand is how is bandwidth gettin so cheaper in India.

Everybody here is singing the broadband tune these days.

Hope they start that soon.

And one more thing they say they won't allow Kazaa, edonkey, other filesharin apps to run on my system...not that i have a problem with that but there are strict antipiracy laws being enforced in India.

Interesting, i'll have never imagined a GAS company going after the Internet market :p

yeah i guess we here in North America we are spoiled by the super fast speed, and low flat prices

We just moved to a new area here in CT and couldn't get the DSL we had, so we went broadband cable, WOW:t Talk about fast, it beats the pants off of the DSL and costs about the same, $42.50 a month. I'm happy and we have unlimited downloads. With 5 machines networked, the cable is Great!!!:D

Wireless? hmmm, not sure I'd like that, security and interferance issues still cause me some concern, but for $9.95 a month I guess it beats dial up, except for that limit on downloads.

If security is a concern, it can be beefed up.

You can change the name of wireless routers to something that is pretty undecipherable without seeing it. Turn on encryption. Some setups will allow you to specify hosts allowed to connect (I am sure the ISP mentioned will do this or everyone can connect with the right equipment)

I have been playing with Zone Alarm Pro. It has a lot more features than the freebie. I can actully make my pc disappear form the network while still accessing anything on the internet or network. It is kinda funny to open the Domain from Enitre Network and not see my PC.

Security is possible.

thanx rraehal and all others for the advice...when you have a 56K dialup you didn't have to think about all this security stuff

oh well, anyways. That ISP is actually givin me a choice between Norton Firewall or ZoneAlarm pro haven't used either of them.

i was surprised it was all included with the package.

thanx fancyf for all those wonderful links...

i would loved to be hacked:p ...since i have never seen that happening before to me or someone else... i will be prepared for the worst though..

Anyways i don't use this system like a "always on " connection have to shut down otherwise the electricity bills are going to go up like Mount Everest...and being a student i don't think that will be right...need to save money u c.
