I have a really old SCSI-2 CD writer from 1998. It's a Ricoh 6x2x2 writer. (Yes it does take more than 40 minutes to burn a 650 MB CD).
The problem is that it does not support the 700 MB CD-Rs. And I can't find anyone who is still selling the 650 MB media.
Anyone know a place that sells the 650 MB media?
Can't believe I spent over $400 on that thing...

forget about that drive! you can get an ide cdrw drive from compusa for under $50!! don't waste your time!

hers some, marked as 74min, but take Midnytes advice, in 1960 $400 would have bought you a house, stop living in the past and start moving with the times.

LOL , reminds me the other day I was at BestBuy picking up a 50 pack of CD-R 's for $20 us , and in the next isle was a 48x burner for the $19 us -mir.
There's plenty of cdr- 650 media on Pricewatch. Be mindful of the rated speed , since some burners are also not compatible with faster media.

People, you DON'T need 650 Mb CD to use on an old 650 CDRW drive
700Mb even higher MB like the 99 minute CDs will still work on those old drives
the problem is that you are wasting the rest of the MB :p

Yeah, I agree that it can be quite nostalgic to get this baby to run again. Then again, like what the other guys have mentioned, writers come darned cheap nowadays, even the cheapest model on the market is faster than your SCSI-2 writer.
Time to consider something new... :)

You're missing the point though - His is scsi and scsi writers arent as cheap as IDE and I presume he wishes to keep it scsi which is sensible!!!
Ide writers suck - scsi is much more reliable - check Yamaha and their excellent burners - 8mb buffer - cdrw8432 scsi - no buffer underrun but ive never burned a coaster yet. USB is a better bet than IDE!!!
Allg is partLY Correct, you can use 700mb cd's on your plasmon but most 700mb cdr's are speed rated too high to use reliably. If you had a cdrw you could use cdrw's as they are rated at lower speeds - Ive got some 2/4 speeds.

Ok I'm sorry. I know that SCSI devices are definitely more reliable than IDE. Well, his question has already been answered, but I still would like to say that he should change to an IDE writer since they're pretty cheap nowadays with increased reliability over the years, though still failing behind SCSI devices.

I would still rather have an ide 52x cdrw drive than a 2x scsi. With burnproofing and larger caches, the newer ide drives are pretty solid. I haven't had problems with 'em. Now if he would get a new SCSI cdrw, then that's a different story........

Yeah so would I but I paid £150 for my scsi , it does the job , i dont have any ide free and i just love my Yammy mammy - i can wait the extra time for a burn.
Would be interesting to compar the actual burn times with my scsi and your 52 speederfor a full 700mb cd.
Scsi drives also overburn more reliably than IDE and USB on my tests at home and at work. Indeed some IDE/USB dont overburn at all with nero.

My 48 speed burns a full 700mb to 900mb in three and a half minutes, start ot finish. about seven/nine for a rewrite.

My scsi takes 20 minutes to full erase a 700mb cdrw using Nero.
What do you base your results on - Nero?
Cd packages are another issue.
Ive found the best cdwriter in terms of cd resources to be CD-MATE - Nero can cause almost all apps except explorer to hang and wait till the erase is finished - cdmate doesnt.
Will post my results for cdr and cdrw full 700mb write once ive timed em.
My Yammy burns cdr at 8 cdrw at 4.
So it should be 6 and 12 times slower - 21 mins & 84 mins basing it on your results.
I know for a fact it doesnt though - we'll see....

Rewrite only takes 25 minutes for a full 700mb.
See SCSI and Yammy is the dogs!!!
CD-R only takes 11 minutes.
SCSI SCSI SCSI
I think taht goes to prove all these quoted speeds are just advertising gimmicks - accoring to the epxerts the max sustained transfer tare is 16 speed even for max 52 speed drives.

I use nero and burn large mpegs, so file size is anywhere between 500 to 900mb depending on the movie. I don't really know what you mean about a 25min rewrite, but to burn a 700mb file takes three and a half minutes. if I use a re-writeable disk to store personal files, like large pdf's then it takes double the time, seven minutes.
So why do you think your scussie is faster? This is an ordinary 133ide.

I didnt say it was faster than yours - Read the post.
52 speed write isnt 52 speed.
I was basing my theoretical speeds based on yours!!!
"My Yammy burns cdr at 8 cdrw at 4.
So it should be 6 and 12 times slower - 21 mins & 84 mins basing it on your results"
SCSI is more reliable - Ive never burned a single coaster since I bought the drive and on read tests it even beats my Samsung 52 speed drive when reading / transferring a 700mb file to hdu at full tilt and its only rated as a 32 speed read!!!
Yes but IDE cdwriters dont use UDMA4 or 5 - I think the fastest they can achieve is udma3?
SCSI is a faster bus system with less cpu overhead than IDE!
I was trying to point out the advertising of anything over 16 speed doesnt really achieve the quoted speed in real life tests.

could be, my cars rated to reach 140mph but I've never really gone there. All i know is that I can cope with a three minute burn, and if my next cdrw makes it one minute I'll be even more chuffed. Scsi does have a very stable and reliable reputation. But 25mins would not please me, I'd need to upgrade.:)
