After I install my new video card and shut down, my computer fails to boot up after the memory check. My old video card is a motherboard mounted chipset card (ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2X) and the card I wish to install is a nVidia GeForce2 MX 200. I am sure the GeForce is compatible with my system, I use Warcraft 3 to test the card. The GeForce comes with some directions for my chipset card that need to be disabled. However, when I access my BIOS (I am running PhoenixBIOS), there are no settings as described in the directions. What should I do? All help is greatly appreciated.

Yep yer intergrated video is conflicting the upgrade one. Must disable-thats why after mem check is where it fails. Cuase the internal vid uses yer system mem. Anyhow two ways to disable video are in bios or jumper on mobo. If nothing in bios its on mobo in the form of a jumper setting-or else it cant be disabled.:t

Yep, there'll hopefully be a jumper like P4 gamer said. Check your motherboard manual for details, or find out what motherboard you have using a tool like CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download) and let us know :)

Alright, I dl'ed CPU-Z and hit the Mainboard tab and this is where it gets weird. In the Manufacturer/Model area, they are BLANK. There is nothing there, it's just greyed out.:confused::confused: But for the chipset/southbridge area, it says Intel and the ID for it.
As for the whole jumper thing, I wouldn't know how to find the jumper, so I'd need some sort of direction on perform such an operation.

Is this a brand system ie Dell/Compaq/HP etc? If so, do you know that model name? (might be written on the front of the case).

Yea, it's an HP Pavilion 8380. It's an "experienced" computer (:

After checking around, things don't look too good... The story here (http://www.epinions.com/content_952606852) isn't really encouraging about your chances of installing a new graphics card. It might be worth getting in touch with HP about it, just to make sure - assuming no one around here has any personal experience they'd like to share... Sorry I couldn't really help :(

The story there is pretty disappointing as my old video card is ALSO an AGP card. HOWEVER, my nVidia card is a PCI card and there are slots for it. Remember, the card works; only when I shut down the computer does the computer fail to boot. So if I restart the computer, it loads just fine. I heard about a program called CTCHIPZ that allows you to modify BIOS settings that are normally "hidden for user safety." Think I should try it?
I'm not sure if this actually helps or not, but my cousin also has an HP Pavilion and he had a chipset card as well, but he upgraded to a Voodoo3 card and it works just fine. His computer is almost as old as mine and he got somebody else to install his card for him though. What say you Fishy?

Hang on, I'm obviously not paying enough attention here... You say that you can install the card fine and Windows recognises it, but after powering down and then switching back on it stalls after the memory check. If you install the card in Windows and then restart the PC, as opposed to shutting down, it's fine. Is that right?

Exactly Fishy, you hit the nail on the head.

How far after mem check-like right away? I think its ACPI cause once the drivers are installed it should get control of video and such after post to handle IRQ's and etc? Dunno? Weird. Sounds like a question for Peter M. While its a unrecognised device by windows it works but once loaded etc. no cold boot-only warm boots. Strange.:t

I agree, it's an odd one  The only other thing I can find at HP's site is this (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph04492&prodId=hppavilion6418) - it mentions changing a jumper (shown on the diagram) to assign an interrupt for "video capture cards or similar devices". I admit to being a bit out of my depth, but it's worth a shot - if it doesn't work, you can always move it back :)

RIGHT after the memory check, the computer stops loading anything. But that's only if I SHUT DOWN, not if I restart. If I restart the computer and check the device manager, my old card has a RED X on it and it says it's been disabled.

Woo woo! Thanks for that site Fishy, solved my problem! Just moved a couple of jumpers and I was all set! I don't really understand HOW it worked, but jumpers are tricky like that. :D
Thanks again everybody!
