right now i have a wireless lan with 2 computers, with dsl pppoe internet access for both computers. the internet is fine, its fast for both computers, but when i use LAN to share files, move files, copy files, install files on each other computers, it lags.. it really lags a lot, it takes 5-10 seconds to open up a folder, 10-15 seconds to open up a program..

i think i might know what the problem is but i cant do much about it.. my sisters comp is in her room upstairs, my computer, with the wireless router is downstairs in the basement.. i think its lagging because there are 2 floors between the wireless router and network card so there might be interference.. on her comp, i checked the wireless network card and it said the transfer or traffic was 60-70%, which isnt bad but isnt good either.. if the comp was right beside mine, it would be 100% but since thers 2 levels separating us its 60-70%..

anyways, is there anything i can do to increase speed.. i swear, everytime i browse through her computer through wireless network, it lags like hell..

both comps use win2k pro, wireless router is dlink 713, network cards r dwl-120..

Check bipolar bills sticky on network slowness when browsing.
It will be slower naturally.

Depends on your definition of slow.

Slow to some ids fast ot others.

i know its supposed to be slow, transferring wirelessly through 2 levels isnt suppose to be fast.. but its so slow, im starting to wonder if its messed up or not.. i go to my network places, click on computers near me, wait 5 seconds, click on the networked computer, wait 5-10 seconds till it loads up, click on a shared folder, wait 10-15 seconds, copy a small 50mb file to my computer, wait 2-3 minutes... is this normal?

Yep.

there is a lot of interference there. is the computer directly above the router? if so, that may be part of the problem. remember that the range of a wireless AP is kind of donut shaped, not a sphere.

read this: http://www17.tomshardware.com/network/20030502/index.html

what standard are you using anyways? 802.11b? if so, then yeah, it'll be slow. even 802.11g isn't nearly as fast as good old cat5e with fast ethernet.

is your sister's room/computer directly above the router? read the optimization guide for more info.

not precisely above.. its definitely 2 floors above, maybe 4-5 meters to the left..

Is it near a wall , metallic items , magnetic iterference ie tv , washing machine etc

Looks like you may be stuck - wireless works best in line of sight.

the router is obviously near a wall :D .. its 4 meters away from tv, 7 meters away from washin machine.. lol.. if i had 2 comps in the same room, i wouldnt spend so much $$ on wireless, id jus go cables :D

you can try moving the antenna around to see if you can get a better signal, but I there's not much more I think you can do.

nah it remains in the range of 60-75%.. keeps giong up and down :(

Floors and walls with metallic lining like some plasterboard and gyproc boards - hell even water tanks can really affectthe signal - I think the signal you are getting is pretty good through 2 floors of what might be steel reinforced concrete if its in a basement.

Harrumph - some users are never satisfied!!!

if you are looking for 100%, then buy a Wireless RELAY hop and put it between floor

Forget 100% - Unattainable without spending extraneous amounts of cash - just be happy with what you have!!!
