Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Poll : What is YOUR Operating System ?
Yep, ND opened his own poll http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Me and my friend from the computer shop argued yesterday which OS is most common. He is pure fan of NT/2000, and sure everyone who knows something about computers won't touch Win9x. Yet, he agrees that most ppl doesn't take advantage of all the things NT/2000 proposes ... still, he keeps installing 2000 on every comp he sells, and by this contributes to 2000 community http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
We spoke about Linux/BeOS and likes too, and agreed that these are truly uncommon, and no freshman will use it untill he knows something more than just hanging around. I showed him the SysOpt, and told him that we can for sure find out who's right here : me - Windows 98/SE, he - Windows NT 4/2000. We're almost 17000 ppl here, and althought only few percents are active, it will be pretty right about the rest of Earth population http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Six-pack of Heineken is involved, so I ask you to be as serious as you can. Please specify only the computers you deal with, home or work, type of OS and version number, all the OSes accepted, but just on PC !
P.S. RobRich, I'm aware of your topic (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/002167.html) , this is different http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thank YOU very much ...

Prefer win2k and I would install it on the laptop too if I could find drivers. Win9x is great for games, but since Win2k came out, there is very littler reason to use it as my main OS.

WinME/Win2k Dualboot (Win2k for use, WinME for troubleshooting other ppl's comps so I can step-by-step with them...and for old old DOS games http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)
When I make comps for other people, I always use WinME unless they request otherwise, because I feel everyone and thier pets know that "windows sucks", and will expect it to crash every once in a while. However, when they try to run something, and it doesn't work, I feel its a bad reason to give that "it just doesnt work in the OS I installed for you". I build for mostly for other teenageers (read: gamers), so I dont want to run into any problems like that.
Also, WinME is easier to use than Win2k (easier shares, no account management, and other stuff halfway confusing to the average user).
I would use Win98SE instead on thier comps, being more stable and all, but I think they would feel a little jipped to have an OS that says 98 on it when its 2001 (Actually this was one of the more prominent reason I bought the upgrade from 98 to ME for my own comp...good market plan MS, ya got me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)
So I guess the answer is that I use Win2k, but all the comps I build for others, I use WinME (No exceptions yet, except for mom's comp, whcih I can support easily if needed, and another comp from my mom's friend that had NT4 on it, and was asked to 'reinstall everything').
I think I'll put it another way - WinME for all my peers, and Win2k for adult userss and myself http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
So - Win2k...Sorry that was so longwinded.
You also have to consider the general populace of people who buy $1000-$2000 comps from Dell and Gateway and other comp resellers, that are almost always loaded with WinME.
NT/2000 computers mostly include computers that dont belong to any one person - such as computers in librarys, computers in computer labs in college campuses, computers in accounting offices, or any other offices, computers with specific duties such as point-of-sales and inventory computers, and the like. I think Win9x/ME is more prevalent among PCs that people own, but of ALL computers, I'm not too sure.
If you take a poll here, I think your results might be slanted, since many of us built our own comps and have the option of picking the OS we want, and we know the reasons why one OS is better. Generally, many people may pick ME over 2K or 98 because its was the latest to be released. Some people may pick ME because they think all OSs perform the same things, and that which one you dont have doesnt matter, and ME is cheaper anyways. So the people whom just dont know better wont have a say in the poll of yours.
On the flip side, computers in librarys, campuses, point of sales, inventory, etc., running NT4/2000 also don't have a say in this poll.
Excuse the long tirade, but I think after last night's English paper, I'm just in a ranting mood. Sorry bout that.

ME was slow on our corporate network, didn't show all available network drives and volumes, and had problems with our Novell 3.1 client. Win 98 is relatively bug free at home and work, with relatively few crashes (most crashes are hardware related), but does require more routine maintenance than NT or w2k.

Win 98se at home.
At work I use machinery that is controlled by NT4. Of course this is in an industrial environment, and we VERY RARELY actually interface with NT, just the control programs. Believe it or not, the computers that control our machinery run NT4.0, and have P200mmx's w/32 mb ram!
Two millicron extruders and two colortronics chemical mixers, so that's four at work, not including the office comp's which run 98fe (prolly about 7)
How about that?

Have had every version of DOS from Dos 5 and every version of windows from 3.0 excluding N/T and win2000 (although I have a copy of win2000 Professional, but have never installed it.)
Imho every version has been better than the one before it and ME is the best ever.
About the only crashes I get is from that useless RealPlayer Basic.
I will get XP as soon as it is available.

I really want to get a Mac just run OS X. I heard since it is essentially Unix with a Mac GUI you can compile LINUX apps to run on it. Then I could have the Mac version of Photoshop, Office 2001, and LINUX apps on one box. Unfortunately the Macs are so darn expensive for such mediocre hardware.

Let's see. I run the computer operations for a college at a large university. Before the upgrade to Win2k, we wasted hour after hour holding our users hands through win98 bs. After the upgrade to 2k on our teaching consoles 4 months ago, I have yet to receive an OS related service request. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Now, this makes me a very happy man. I recommend Win2k any day over 95/98/ME, even for home users. It plays well w/ all internet connections, plays most games and can do almost all multi-media just happy dandy and fine. And of course, it is VERY stable. Not crash-proof, but WAY more stable than 9x. I think the facts speak for themselves.

IMHO, win2000 blows 98se and the whole DOS kernel out of the water. its a much, much better OS....now if XP can integrate the complete compatibility of 9x with the rock solid powerful and stable attributes of 2k then we will be looking at one sweet OS http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Win98/WinNT/Mandrake
Dos/Win3.11/WinNT/QNX/FreeBSD (loaded!)

OK, now you MUST list at least one VMS machine! And by the way (here come the flames!), Microsoft has NEVER put out a real O/S. NEVER. And yes, I use the **** everyday. But, not by choice http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

plus i think you shouldnt group BeOS and FreeBSD together as one. They are not at all very alike. This disappoints me :\

3. Linux (80)

You probably thought ND got tired and left his babypoll alone, don't you ? No, he just didn't have spare time to do the math http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
So, I back. The Bet (the reason for all this - read the first page, wing7788) was cancelled. It seems like many users simply don't know or don't care which version of Windows98 they got, FE or SE, and mixing them together pretty much eliminates the competition between the two great rivals, Windows98SE and Windows2000. So, I've just decided to make final (?) conclusion of the submitted entries, and it seems like we got a winner http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
When I assumed I'll have total picture from asking SysOpt users here, I was wrong. Apparently, people here know what they doing http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif , they understand properly strong and weak points of any given OS, dual-boot with Windows98SE/Windows2000, or even triple-boot with Linux in addition is very common.
Microsoft occupied all the Top Ten (was easy to guess http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ), but it's nice to see Linux being used almost among half of the users that replied. I think the fact it's open-source OS is both weak and strong part of Linux. Companies like SuSe, Red Hat and Mandrake try to support latest hardware, but nobody can compare to Microsoft drivers Team, when it comes to support. They did good job with ME drivers database, althougth ME got more bugs then 98SE, I think it's more suitable for laptops, if you don't want to start searching for drivers.
98SE still seems to be unbeatable when it's about gameplay, compared to 2000 and XP (even in final version, when it's out).
So ... it's about all. If anybody wants to add something - please do, I'll be glad to hear.
Thanks everyone for participation, have a nice day !
Best Regards ...

i dont know much... but i do know in my experince, i woudlnt TOUCH windows 98 with a 10 foot poll when it comes to gaming... and i just dont enjoy the "feel" of 2000 either, i love xp and i got the beta whenit was leaked and i have used it since. i cant tell you all the plues with this os... stability for me is huge and this os cant be 2nd to any of them... something crashes the whole os doesnt fail.... AND IF ANYTHING CRASHES..... i'm shocked out of my mind.... me and my friend play cs hard core.... well his computer will crash 5-6 times a day(his rig a 2200 with 512 ddr gf4 4600 WIN 98 ) and he had it built bye a good company and they have serviced it ect ect new cpu fan all the good stuff and he will crash almsot every hour, where if my comptuer crashes its usualy form power outage :\
nope never again will i use anything but xp, plus it is pretty :D

Windows 2000 Professional. That's all I use, I like that name, has a nice ring to it. I also have an old laptop I haven't used in a while with Win98SE on it, and I own copies of those OSes as well as ME and NT4. Guess I'm kind of a collector.

Windows 2000 Pro Sp3, (2)
Windows 2000 Server, Sp3 (2)
Win NT4 Workstation, Sp6a (4)

WinME (Sux Big Time) (2)
Windows XP (3)
I am also playing with RH Linux 9.0
At Work
WinNT4 Workstation, Sp6a
My favorite OS'es are now Win2K & NT4. They rarely ever crash (especially Win2K) and they run way better than win 98se. Forget about Win ME, ("Microsoft Error") that has to be one of the worst OS'es that MS ever created. I also like Win NT4 at home it is very stable when it is set up correctly. One drawback about NT4 is that you can't play many (Good) games on it because it doesn"t support any DirectX version higher than 3, it doesn't matter to me, i am not a gamer. WinXP is just Win2K with a little more fluff and spyware and it looks more like a Candy Land game with the XP interface.

not sure where this thread surfaced from but i'll jump on
I use everyday W2k sp3 and W98se, got sick of dual boot so i got a KVM switch.
I use a little less frequently W95b and another rig with DOS 6.0 and SEAL on it.
ive got install discs for, and use occasionally, W3.1, W95, WME, xp home and pro, Mandrake 9.1, Peanut 9.3, Red Hat 9.0 and a few other linux variations.
Not real good with the linux yet but im trying, its more a lack of time than patience
:t
I'm using Windows XP Professional now but I used to have Windows 98 SE for three years.

95a/NT4 dual boot
98SE
98SE/W2K x 2 (duals)
W2K
WinMe/W2K/Mandrake 9.0
Total 98SE installations = 3
Total W2K installations = 4
I have read that Win 98 is still the most common OS in the world.
W2K must be the most desirable because it still commands a higher price than XP Pro.
However, I would guess that 75% of the computers in my immediate community are XP Home.

ATM in using winXP Sp1, id rather be using 2k but cant be fussed to change around, i also dualboot it with Mandrake 9
Second machine has 2k on it, but its a bit long in the tooth, gonna peg it back down to 98SE soon and streamline it down for stability

Win98se on my system.
I do work on other people's computers when I can and from those experiences I would not consider anything other than XP as a replacement. However, I'm too broke to buy a system that can handle that O/S. Besides, 98 is doing a great job for me.

Allthough Win2000 may be a good operating system.....its like going back to the dark ages when I use my mates..! You would have thought that by the time they got to the year 2K...Microsoft would have moved away from the interface and looks of windows 95. It looks bad..!
