I would rate the Athlon better for gaming for three reasons:
1) Price: Athlon systems are cheaper than P4 systems. The money you save can be redirected towards a better video card (and in most games today, video card is the bottleneck, not processor).
2) Performance: The P4 WILL outperform the Athlon in certain, heavily optimized games. In a non-optimized game, however, the Athlon will beat the P4 hands down, even with a large difference in Mhz speed. On certain benchmarks, the 1.2 Ghz Athlon beats the 1.7 Ghz P4--despite the P4 running 41% faster in terms of Mhz.
3) Consistency Given #2 above, #3 is important. The Athlon gives consistently high performance, whether you are burning a CD, encoding an MPEG, or playing a game. The P4 does not.
The easiest way to see the comparison is like this:
The Athlon offers consistent VERY GOOD performance--the P4's performance jumps from 'Below Average' to 'Excellent.'

If you don't care about money and everyday real work programs, go with the P4 (you can check reviews at: http://www.sharkyextreme.com )
If you want to save some pennies and get the best real world performance and extremely good gaming perfomance, go with AMD.!

don't forget the upgrade path. Current P4's will be obsolete by Q4 and today's compatible motherboards will be left with no upgrade options.
Also, new case/PS needed for the P4.
