Need hard drive recommendation plz

Im planning on getting an IDE ATA100 7200rpm 30-60gigs, but which Brand is good?

and also could you guys tell me which websites are selling the brand you're suggesting at good quality??

I have always used Western Digital and they haven't failed me even once..!!! I still have one 420mb WD hard drive and it still kicking.!

I used to only use western digital or seagate. I broke down and tried the IBM 75GXP and was very pleased with the performance/price ratio. I hear the 60GXP series is even better. As long as they keep making em as good as they are now, I'm an IBM fan http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Sometimes the Best Price (http://www.pricewatch.com/) is not the best place to shop. Check the web sites Ratings (http://www.resellerratings.com/) before you purchase on line.

I have used several different Hdd of all sizes, Maxtor, Seagate, WD, Quantum, Fujitsu and so far the quietist seams to be my IBM-DTLA307030(30gb).

The drive I had the most problems with Fujitsu. I had 2 new ATA100s that went bad in about 1yr and one of the replacement drives went bad after about 4 months of use.

IBM has always made good quality stuff and in hard drives they have done exceptionally well. The only thing that bothers me it's price.! Western drives are well priced and they perform extremely well for the money.

I have had no problems with any Western Digital drives. I've heard real good things about those IBM drives mentioned. I've never owned an IDE IBM but the SCSI IBMs I have are chunking away just fine after 4 years of RAID abuse. I've had Seagates fail in multiple systems. Our company use to buy a lot of Maxtor drives because they were cheap and we had a few of those fail, but probably because we bought so many. I can't recommend a good place to buy from because I haven't bought a drive in a long time.

I've experienced extreme problems with maxtor and wd. Thou I was told that the newer maxtor drives are good (they cost virtually nothing). I would still use IBM drives, they seem to perform fine.
(Have 30Gb/7200/2mb).

I like IBM, WD, Maxtor, Samsung. Avoid Seagate. If you want a fast drive the 7200 rpm is much more important than getting ATA100. An ATA66 7200 rpm is just about the same as the ATA100 7200 rpm. As the ATA100 speed is only achieved when reading data from the drive's buffer not when it is reading from the platter.

I realize that most PCs have 2 or more hard drive, could someone explain the purpose of this except for more space?

DEFINITELY go with IBM Deskstar 75GXP or 60GXP. They have a SUPER efficient silent mode where he drive can be set so that there is ABSOLUTELY no noise from it's working. I am so sure because i have it running (75GXP 60gb 7200rpm ata100) in my system for over 3 months now. It's VERY good.

I will NOT recommend WD. Quantum drives (big ones) seem to be VERY noisey and Maxtor is ok .....

most computers have one but the ones that have more are usually in a raid configuration. there's alot of options like having data write on both the hard drives so if one fails then you still got the other one. There are more configurations though but dont worry about it. You dont need raid. If there not in any raid config then its just more space get a 30 or 40 gig ibm drive and you wont run out of space for a while.

My brand of choice is IBM these days. I also like my Quantum drives - though many people seem to dislike Quantum.

Maxtor and Seagate drives have been very reliable for me but not so great in performance.

I don't trust Samsung anymore after seeing 2 of 4 drives fail.
