I got an old Laptap, a Compaq Pentium 100. If I reformat the drive and clean install windows 95, do I do the same as if it were a desktop? Are the drivers also there in windows?

yes the steps are the same

:t

and no, Drivers are most likely NOT INCLUDED

so you better download them from the Compaq website before you go ahead ;)

Yes

I managed to install win95 on an old Compaq Aero Contura - 486SX25 - Microsoft says it isnt possible but well - they're never right ... right!
There shouldnt be many new drivers required for a laptop unless you have pcmcia cards.

And... I don't have the CD drive for it. Is it possible to connect it to another desktop PC using parrallel ports and use the CD drive from there? If possible, how?

erh... yes and no

Does it have a Floppy Drive at least?

if you do then copy the old DOS Lynk something

and then after the Quick Format

via Format /q/s

you can run the link program from DOS and use the Parallel to get the Win95 directory from the other PC to the laptop

then run the install locally

It has the floppy drive and it's working.

old DOS Lynk

Do I have to copy this to the bootdisk?

you can run the link program from DOS and use the Parallel to get the Win95 directory from the other PC to the laptop

Do you mean I have to copy setup to the hard disk of the desktop, run Lynk from Laptap and search the setup from Laptap? Where do I find the Lynk?

the correct name is Interlink but in DOS it was named like Interlnk or something like that

is any full DOS just type HELP

and you can find it there

youjust need the 2 files for those programs, the .SYS and the .EXE

.SYS on the host, and the .EXE in the client

is really easy to setup

then all you need is the Parallel port to parallel cable or serial to serial

no it does not come in the boot disk, you have to manually add it

If you can format the HDD and then somehow copy the win98 folder from the 98 disc to that HDD vi another computer etc, you can run setup.exe from that directory in DOS, thus eliminating the need for the CDROM. The difficult part of course is getting the folder offa the PC to the laptop

The app used to be called Fast PC Linker , for Windows or Dos, but its now FileVan (http://www.filevan.com/link.html) . Its Shareware , free for a couple uses. The older copy is here (http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/28763.html) . I've used the original in my W95 days (still have it on floppy)without CD drives and its easy to use, slow but work fine. I've tried the newer version also for Windows and it work fine also. You'll need a Interlink Parallel cable, DB25 to DB25, to link the 2 pc's.
I always copied the W9x dir from HDD to HDD. Can't remember if optic drives are supported. Best way to get file tranfers if you have no CD drive or network .
And now you know, the rest of the story.:D

Seem it's getting clearer to me now. Will look for a freeware DOS prog that can do file transfer using parallel or serial ports, if there's one and will try it.

That all depends on the size of the hard disk you have in the laptop - I presume its larger than 1gb?

it's FREE it's PART of DOS already, why go searching for something that you already have? :x

Client
http://www.easydos.com/interlink.html

Host
http://www.easydos.com/intersvr.html

in a DOS prompt just type HELP for more details

The laptap hd is 840 mb. If the setup file wold not fit in the laptap hd, I plan to run setup from the desktop if it's possible. I'll figure out the interlink.exe installation though I have a very short knowledge of DOS.

i doubt very much that it will work - you need to copy most of the cd over then you need space for the install. Interlink from what i remember is not remote access it is just used for file transfer!
Its been a long time since I last installed win95 but you may have just about enough space.

Being a p100 I kinda thought you might be stuck - you dont have access to a paraller port external cd do you>?

Or a network card to do it over the wire?

You may very well be stuck.

If I remember right you just need the W95 folder and run Setup from there, which on my W95c disk is about 150mb. The last pc (486) I did this on had a 512mb HDD. You might want to copy the Driver folder also, in case you dont have updated drivers on floppies. I'd test drive the W95 Startup disk first, and either transfer program you chose , before formatting. You dont want surprises.
You still need the 'cable' though.

The laptap had the parallel and serial ports and I have the connector for two parallel ports. Okay, then I have to copy it first into the laptap hd. The drivers, I'll do first for standard vga display and web search the others. Thought it to be sooo hard to do. It seem it is now easier than I thought. Have to study the DOS commands and plan to do it this weekend. Will post again if I can't run the Interlink. Thanks to all and good day... :t :t

it shouldn't be too difficult, just let me know if you have trouble with the commands and options ;)

I'll also recomend you to run a TEST trial first with them via PARALELL between the 2 computers

before you actually go ahead and format

for me it had never failed, and works all the time

by the way the Fatest you can get is 1.5 Meg of transfer per Second

on a good wire

else roughly 1 Meg per Second
