SOLUTION: don't use IE, switch to Mozilla or Opera instead ;)

www.mozilla.org

www.opera.com

if you really want to stick with the Open Holes of IE, well then turn off ACTIVE X and Java

BUT!!!!!! if you do that, then that's just like NOT using a web browser at all, cuz you wont be able to see like 95% of the internet with ACTIVE X turned off :x

so you might as well SWITCH

Use SpywareBlaster:

Update it too, of course.

Two programs that I have had a lot of success using on my own system are Spybot (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=spybot&tg=dl-2001) and Ad-Aware 6.0 (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=Adaware&tg=dl-2001) I use them together, and they do a good job of getting spyware, adware and spamware off my machine, and I am an addicted downloader and get filled to the brim with garbage, and these do a good job of cleaning me up.

I have not used the one BPB suggested but TechGuru suggested two that I have used. I second his suggestion to use Spybot. It has a option to "immunize" which stops all auto installs and all spyware cookies as well before they have a chance to even be saved. It does not seem to affect a standard cookie though in any negative way. I just love Spybot and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The makers of Spybot say that SpywareBlaster is superior for immunization.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ also has MRU-blaster which is also excellent. If you want absolute control over your browsing experience and want to prevent xupiter and the like then use The Proxomitron 4.5 (http://computercops.biz/downloads-cats-19-10-10.html) .

But don't you guys find the 1 or 2 sec lag using those things, very annoying?

well is actually 0.1 or 0.2 sec, but feel more like a whole sec

Like I told you before AllGamer, my entire page loads in 1-2 seconds. If there is a lag in there I don't notice it. Proxo actually makes pages load quicker by removing any long loading scripts or ads etc. It does not make pages load slower. IE is just as fast as Mozilla when it is used.

im not sure about the lag, but proxomitron is so easy to crash in long pages.. which is why i now use Firebird so there is no need to run a separate app. :)

I use combo of SpywareBlaster, Ad-aware, & spybot. SpywareBlaster keeps stuff from ever installing on my system in the first place, and the others remove anything that slips by.

Thanks BPB....there was apparently some things Spybot wasn't getting. I think it said something to the toon of around 300+ things actually.

Question: Should I keep both like Pasadenas does or just run Spywareblaster by itself? How much is overkill?

If you use SpywareBlaster, you still need Spybot and Ad-Aware because SB only immunizes your system, it doesn't find or remove spyware that's already installed, which is what the other two are for. You need both Spybot and Ad-Aware in that role because both find some things the other misses. I run Spybot once a week normally and the much slower Ad-Aware once a month in case something slips by Spybot. They don't use system resources when not running and take a miniscule amount of hard drive space.

All 3, my god, can you imagine if anti-virus was like this? We would have to run some Nort-caffe-cillin concoction to feel safe. Seriously though, all 3!!??!!

Izdaari

Well, to be thorough you should run two different anti-viruses too because even the best AV will miss some things that a different one will find. Same principle.

SpywareBlaster is a different function than SpyBot or Ad-Aware. It does essentially what the Immunize feature of SpyBot does, so I consider it a replacement for that feature only, not for the whole program.

But you're right, it is a pain that we have to go to such lengths to protect ourselves from spyware.

Geez I'll have to agree with AG, using netscape you don't have to run all that stuff if your really worried about it. I'll use IE once in a great while if I have to access an acct. site that wasn't written up with netscape in mind, otherwise you don't pick up any adware in netscape.

I found this app called "Adware Agent" and it
stops over 200 Active-X Spyware controls.

it can also remove known spyware and adware running
on your PC.

Welcome to Sysopt Bill. That program looks pretty good but I think I will continue running the three free ones.
In any case, thanks for the link. I'm sure not everyone is a cheapskate like me.
