Anyone want to make any predictions on what will be possible with an average PC in five years?
Real time translation with voice? (Audio Babelfish, anyone?)
Realisitic environments in games?

I don't wanna predict anything, just wait five years and see http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Look back 5 years and maybe that will help you extrapolate what the next five years will bring. Hmmm... 5 years ago...
Windows 95 was rapidly replacing Windows 3.1. Everyone was rejoicing the ability to use long file names, and the Mac-heads were snickering that they could do this all along. Maybe within the next five years we'll all be using linux http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif.
The 486 was the pre-eminent x86 processor. I still remember my dad buying a 486DX2-66 and being awed by how incredibly fast it was. All my 386-bound buddies were sooo jealous! Of course the only REAL reason to get a 486 was so we could all play....
DOOM. After DOOM hit the scene, there was an expolsion of networked and 3D video games. I start to drool thinking about what video games are going to look like 5 years from now... probably even better than the Final Fantasy movie that's coming out this summer. That would be cool.
Oh yeah... 5 years from now Excel 2005 and Word 2005 will load up in one second instead of two seconds. It would load up faster... but the code will have gotten so bloated that half of all the processing gains will have been eaten up by poor coding.

I truly think that we will have hit totally realistic graphics in video games. I've been thinking about that for awhile, now. Just look at some of the games coming out in the Fall 2001. (!!!)
