I see alot of these but I really need one that works best so Im asking you guys. What is the best one out there. I don't mean using seaparate ones, but a all in one would be cool. I want one that will take care of the registry, defrag it, delete unwanted keys, optimize it in general. Other files, shortcuts, and system optimizing features would be nice.

Norton Utilities is probably the best across the board, although its not perfect. You really are better off using a combo of several freeware apps

what would you recommend?

Jv16 powertools
easycleaner
dustbuster
adaware
spybot
and windows disk cleanup

the above are all free, the only proper piece of commercial software i would add to that is Diskeeper

I take it you like dustbuster Jakk after all eh
Already added it to your essential software eh - try Winramxp pro too - best ram adjuster even better than cacheman!

Whats JV16 any good?

Jv16 cleans up all sorts, only thing against it is it tends to pickup everything and everything and can stumble into things it shouldnt. For this reason it should really only be used by those who know what they are doing. As for ram optimisers, dont need one of those atm :)

CleanSweep should not be installed.

Yup, kill all of the annoying services Norton Utils runs at startup in MSCONFIG but for maybe unerase which should be running at all times, and it flys

I'm a big fan of Norton Utilities from DOS until WinME

in win2k / NT /XP it does do ****, in fact nothing from any 3rd party do anything real, cuz none of them has direct hardware access

well the only tools worth while in Norton now, is the Undelete and Registry tracker and Advance registry editor, and a few other tools

but the stuff i loved the most such as Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, they ain't the same counterpart you see in Win9x

the NT version is just a windows defrag on steroids

The Norton defrag isnt that great anyhows IMO, your better off using Diskeeper as a pure defragger

--Jakk:t

AllGamer

that's the other one that also doesn't work in real mode

Diskeeper is just another win defrag on steroids

i've tried them all, none of those works for real inside Win2k/XP/NT

the only way to do it real is boot back to Win98 and defrag from there :x

BipolarBill

Wrong again. Diskeeper can do a boot-time defrag.

Geez - if you don't know what you're talking about, STFU.

AllGamer

But the thing about Boot time defrag is just like the Boot time Chkdsk, and it takes a looooooooooong while before you can use the PC again

and that is way incovenient

remember in Win9x you can work and Defrag at the same time, and you still get a full defrag

but in WinNT systems, that's not possible

unless, you do it outside NT or like what Diskeeper does Before you have access to the system during boot

i still see the old way better

Erm, yes you can in NT, Norton and Diskeeper will both run a defrag within the windows environment while you work. If anything i found 9x's defragger to be the most jittery ogf the lot. Even if data was coming in off the modem it would throw a wobbler about the HDD being in use

Sometimes I wonder...

AllGamer
06-10-2003, 11:29 AM
what i refer to, is the defrag completely vs defrag and leaving lots of spaces in between in Win2k/xp

both norton and diskeeper leaves lots of gaps, that just bugs the **** out of me

but the same version of both software in win9x they do a fully neat clean and tidy defrag :p

Norton does, Diskeeper however does a pretty fandoodlelytastic job as far as im concerned

only if you use the boot option for diskeeper, else, due the File Protection System and Files in uses in Win2k/XP it will still leave the gaps ;)

norton can do that too, but you have to Manually "schedule" it using X-SETUP, it can't do it on its own, basically it has no easy access like diskeeper does

well i dont believe any of Utilites program.. i only use

Windows Wahser 4.8
Ad-ware 6.0
AVG Anti-virus

i using the windows defragment although i have to defag 3-4 time to get it clean.

Shesh, all this over defrag utilities.

Norton does just fine, and i may leave gaps, but if you look at where it leaves them, its in smart spots. Like next to the swap file (so i can expand which out going all over the drive) and by other freq. modified files. So these files have room to move, without becoming fragged.

And who in their right mind runs the defrag while doing other things on the comp? That is just idiocy at work. How can you get an effect defrag if your writting **** do the disk while your trying to organize it? Not to mention it slows down your computer.

I agree with Slade, actually using the ystem while its defragging in windows is a bit of an exercis ein futility. Me, i set up diskeeper and go and make a cup of tea or read the TV paper, come back ten minutes later and its done, simple. If however i was to boot up an AVI file and watch it while defragging the results would be less than desirable

I agree with Jakk...a few of the utilities in Norton SW work great..(Especially the one button check up to clean up that ever growing registry...no problems yet.)

For Defragging...I've tried just about everything out there...had pretty good luck with Perfectdisk from Raxco.

I'm pretty sure there's a trial version...give it a shot.
It doesn't have Boot time defrag...so, sorry if you're really held up on that.

I use both DK and O&O Defrag Pro (www.oosoft.de/index-e.html). O&O Defrag Pro gives more information about the files being moved, DK does not. However, I prefer DKs boot-time derfag feature.

Otherwise:
Jv16 Power tools www.jv16.org (freeware)
RegVac www.superwin.com (low initial cost, updates free there after)
WinRescue www.superwin.com (low initial cost, updates free there after and reduce cost on other Windows versions of WinRescue)
Windows Washer www.webroot.com (shareware, payable updates)
