:( All of a sudden I can't get to my bank account to check or to pay my Credit Card on line. I put the url in, get to the home site and when I try to sign in, up comes "This page cannot be displayed..."
I happened once before and I recovered my latest drive image but I'm not sure I want to do that. There must be a reason but I can't find it.
Any help appreciated
Doc.

Check your security settings in Internet Options. Scan your PC for spyware with AdAware and/or Spybot:

www.lavasoft.de

http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

My bet is that Kazaa has something to do with this.

In anemergency, download and use Mozilla Firebird:

www.mozilla.org

You'll notice that I specified an emergency and also Firebird - not that fat, ugly Mozilla monster. :(

Gotta agree with BPB, i use mozilla 1.2 and its for its ease of use, not speed in terms of which IE definitley is the better. Firebird is a great little thing, but the file associations problem puts me totally off it

OK Done the spybot and still no use.
The glitch also stops Sainsbury's on line ordering.
Does this mean I'm doomed to starve to death O masterful one?
I'm not sure what mozillaFirebird does so downloaded and ready unzipped in it's own little folder but nervous about using it!
Does it take the place of Int. Explorer?
I'm OK at the tech stuff but not so hot at any big software problems.
I am just another southern software softie (geddit???) :-@
BUT help still needed or I can't pay my bills and we shall all be thrown out in the snow covered streets. (weeps copiously)

Forgot to say, I already have spybot ver. 1.2 and run it weekly.
Might be worth saying I have a small network with an old P 200 as server and my main set a 1.8 Athlon plus a Dell laptop.
Server and lappy connect but neither can get to the PC.
Pinging produces the right results but still no connection. I have broadband here.

Try firebird, it wont take over IE, it'll co-exist with it, it may ask if you want to make it the default browser, for this troubleshooting purpose just say no

Hell'steeth. I have downloaded the firebird and extracted it to a separate foldr and when I d/click it, is looks at me and sez cant access www.mozilla.org. and freezes till I run task manager and shut it down. I think I'll download another copy from the 'net and see if it worls.
Bah humbug!
Thanks for helping Jakk. I.m getting worried. I've doe a vurus update and ran that, spybot plus cleansweep, washer, Kazaa has gone and I've turned off all the internet apps except this site.
Try a new firebird zip file next

Hmmn, if it keeps up i would suspect your internet settings are fouled up somewhere deep and dark rather than a specific problem with IE/Mozilla and that can be very problematic, ive managed to do similar things once or twice by fiddlign with the registry too much and boy have i been sorry :(

Find your HOSTS file and edit it or delete it. I would simply remove all redirects back to 127.0.0.1 and your own IP.

In IE, I would click the 'help' menu and click 'about Internet Explorer' and check the cipher strength. It should be 128 bit. If it's not 128 bit you won't be able to go to secure site's such as banking sites, Hotmail, ect. If cipher strength is 0, you need to repair IE. If you are on Windows XP you could also click Start/run and type 'regsvr32 softpub.dll' and click OK.

About IE saya 128 bit; ran the regsvr32 etc and reply is that it succeeded.
Can I do a repair on XP Int. Exp V 6 ? If so, what is the command?
I don't mess with registry very much Jakk, I'm still nervous but will have a go.

IE can be repaired in add/remove programs, however i dont think its a problem with IE, or else Mozilla woul dhave worked okies. I fyou have system restore enabled in XP you could always revert back to before the problem started and see if that worked?

Have you checked your host file yet? Very good point by Bpb that

Find your HOSTS file and open it with Wordpad please.

Kazaa and Real One player both mess with it.

Dont move it, leave it wher eit is an open in notepad, then if there are any adresses with 127.0.0.1 in front of them it means they are blocked, if they shouldnt be blocked then delete the line, save the host file and give em a go

BipolarBill

Here's mine. You can see all of the blocked sites. To fix yours, remove all lines like that and save.

Clean Richards
06-09-2003, 01:29 PM
Can you browse OK to all other sites? How about MS Passport type sites such as Hotmail? I would also puruse your Internet options/ privacy and security tabs. Do you run any kind of firewall or Internet security program?

Oh boy, problems have problems!
I replaced the hosts file in system32 drivets etc and opened it with notepad. ALL the items in there are 127.0.0.1 and sevearl are linked to kazaa. rest are adware and other crappy stuff (it says)
If I can get back, can I delete the entries kleaving an empty hosts file or should I delete it.
At presemnt I'm onm the laptopbecos the PC just froze solid in the middle of typing this reply (on there)
I think I have a much nbigger prob than I thought, just now on restart it said disk boot failure, insert system disk and press.....
Ominous or what.
I think I cn pick up e-mails but can't send though can fix that tomorrow.
I have had a brabnd new replacement IBM 80Gb about a year ago so it's back to the drawig board maybe. Any hopeful ideas please?#

The PC just gets as far as the network p/word and freezes there. I wonder if Norton AV still works in DOS. I have a dos folder with most of the utilities in there - I started of in computers with DOS 1.25 in 1980 or thereabouts so still happy in there. I'll try tomorrow, I'm a bit knackered, 75 is getting a bit tiring these days! Free TV license or not.

If you still cant get in and cant rectify the problem from DOS it sounds to me like a reformat and reinstall might be in order, oh fun :(

Check your privacy settings and make sure the websites cookie settings have not been blocked!

Its rare but it sometimes affects sites that wont allow you access unless you let it set a cookie!

Check the hosts as BPB says
iTS IN c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Sounds very like a keylogger virus called Smap - you may already have had your credit card details stolen - I dont want to worry you but id get a couple of virus checkers and give your system a very thorough check!!!!!!!

Use AVG then try something like McAFEE or Panda - Theyre all free except mcafee!

Don't frighten a chap like that!
I have Norton AV and McAfee in the rack but AVG is new to me. I'll try it but Norton said it found nothing. I'll try McAfee tomorrow if I get time but even at my advanced age it's busy all day. People say "You know ALL about computers, here's my brother's etc. Really, much of the timer I know ***all about the bloody things as you can see.
When I was in the navy, people used to say, "My cousin is in the navy, his name is Tom Baker, do you know him?" Er, excuse me??!!!
Ah me. Orf to me bed now for a well earned zizz.

Thought I'd take the advice and re-format and reload (sigh - not again!)
I have stored my address book but where will I find my saved e-mails, *.DBX files? The latest glitch is that the search facility is missing a file and won't work. I have "Whereis.com" from DOS days and that won't find the files.
They don't seem to be in outlook express or am I looking in the wrong place?
First, I want to try eveythin you have suggested the try restoring drive image from end of May when all was ok. Wish me luck but --- where find *.dbx???

In outlook express select tools / options / maintenance - STORE FOLDER will give you the lcoation when you click it.

Its not just one file but many depending on how many folders you have in outlook - each file relates to the folders in outlook express.

Well people, I have tried everything you guys have thrown at me over the last days - what a bunch you are, I just wonder how you manage to possess such deep knowledge?!!!
All your suggestions have not mended my problems so I'm restoring my drive image of 10/05/03 and after that, who knows,
I'm orf to bed now, I have a dreadful cold with a dripping nose and cotton wool for brains (who said anyone else would say **** for brains?)
You really are good pals to try to help Top rating for this thread as you will see.
