I recently built my first computer using this board with Corsair TIWNX512-3200LL memory and a P4 2.8G C cpu, windows XP home. After a couple of days getting the memory timing right so the thing would install windows (probably not running at the highest speed possible) I finally have everything working, except for one quirk.....

Whenever I try to remove a USB mass storage device (I have two, one is a SanDisk secure digital card reader, and the other is a Yamaha Spyder CD-RW) the computer reboots. The computer reboots if I simply unplug the device, or if I do it 'properly' throught the remove hardware tool.

I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction here, I'm afraid Gigabyte dosen't have the greatest support in the world.

One more thing, just before it reboots, there is a flash of a screen with about two paragraphs of words on it. Looks like an error screen you get, but the computer reboots before you can even start to read it.

(I have done the memtest 3.0 on my RAM and get no errors through all of the tests....)

Update your BIOS first.

Go to control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery.

Untick "Automatically restart" and set memory dump to None.

Hopefully, you'll get a blue-screen error with a message next time.

I must warn you that overclocking and USB don't mix well.

Thanks for the info, here is the error code

Bug Check 0x35: NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS

Any idea how to solve this, or is it a bios thing... I already have the latest bios update..

Thanks again!

This is a bad driver situation. Update all drivers. Be sure that you have updated software. Install all service packs. If you're overclocking, don't.

Read those pages carefully.

"A higher-level driver has attempted to call a lower-level driver through the IoCallDriver interface, but there are no more stack locations in the packet. This will prevent the lower-level driver from accessing its parameters.

This is a disastrous situation, since the higher level driver is proceeding as if it has filled in the parameters for the lower level driver (as required). But since there is no stack location for the latter driver, the former has actually written off the end of the packet. This means that some other memory has been corrupted as well".

so have you gone to the normal cas 2.5
or somewhere below the extreme " 2-2-2-6-T1 " - it should be "1T"

and the motherboard IS back at normal factory default

No, I found a version 7 of the bios (beta) that seems to take care of the problems.

I can run the memory at 2-3-2-6
No overvoltage.

I've never seen this memory run at it's 'spec'd' 2-2-2-5

But all is well in my world! Thanks for the help!

Trouble in paradise....

seems that my issue has somehow resurfaced again. I have not changed anything and now my USB problem is back.

But, there is something else I have noticed. The light on the front of the SanDisk SD card reader flickers once every second. In unison with this, the HD activity light flashes. I have a Western Digital SATA HD that I boot from, and a Maxtor IDE drive as storage.

Any ideas what this could be? I have the computer set at the 'optimal' settings in the BIOS. Which I have the beta version 7. The ram settings are as follows. 2-6-3-2 no overvoltage.

TIA

Matt

What is the problem exactly? What is the blue-screen error?

same as the one above....

I haven't got a clue. Try repairing XP and reapplying Service Pack 1:

But mjrtoo is overclocking, right? And a BETA bios?? Got problems? You mite be screwing around with your system too much ;) . But then, without mistakes, we'd never learn.

Well, I'm not overclocking that I know of.... I could go back to BIOS 6 and still get the same thing. Only there I have to adjust the timings to 2-6-3-3 with .2 over voltage.

This board will not allow me to do CAS to RAS anything higher than 2.

The CPU nor the AGP bus are overclocked. Just the standard voltages to both.

It's just strange that the lights on the USB device are flashing in time with the SATA HD light. The computer runs very well except for the crash upon removal of a USB device.

Just wondering if shutting down or disconnecting USB device is an issue?

I had a PCI to USB card in the computer....took this out and all seems well.

I'll have to talk to gigabyte and see what's up.

I can't believe that you didn't mention a USB card. That was a huge oversight on your part.

Who made the card? What brand of chip is on it?

Yeah, it was, but, everything was working. Everything plugged into that card.

Sorry for that.

It's ALi M5273

Do yourself a favor and dump that card. Pick up a new USB 2.0 card based on the NEC chipset:

http://www.usbwholesale.com/pci%20usb2%20card.htm

It's a good card and cheap. There are 2-port cards there for less too.

An update on this issue. The USB light on my SanDisk SD card reader still flickers with the HD light. But a lot harder to see.

I'm still curious why my HD light flashed about once every second constantly...

hi, sorry for my bad english

you wrote "I have a Western Digital SATA HD that I boot from, and a Maxtor IDE drive as storage. "

I have

What is the bios configuration?

Thanks

You must place SCSI before IDE in the boot sequence to start from SATA. I would remove IDE/HDD from the boot sequence completely so there is no confusion. Also disable "Boot from other devices".

You should have mentioned your motherboard. On some motherboards, SATA will be "BBS-0".

You have to do the old F6 during the windows install and install the appropriate RAID controller driver from floppy.

Just shoot me an email and I can send them to you if you need them.

I will post my bios config when i get home this evening just for reference.

Here are some settings I use on my system. As well as the SATA/RAID controller drivers and also BIOS 7c.

Boot order:
Floppy
CDROM
SCSI

Timings:
CAS latency 2
Active to Precharge 5
DRAM RAS TO CAS 2
DRAM RAS Precharge 2
Refresh mode 7.8 us

DIMM overvoltage +.2v

Top performance mode enabled

Here's a link to my FTP site (http://home.earthlink.net/~m_ras). Take what you need

Don't forget CTRL + F1 in the BIOS...
