Has any body tried any of the internet speed up programs? It looks like I'm stuck with 56k for a while, because cable modems are not going to be in my area for a couple more years. Some of the speed up programs make pretty bold claims. I was just wondering, do they really work, or just add cpu overhead?

I tried them and they sucked. I hear they only work on people that use winblows 95. I did find something a few weeks ago that helped my ping some. It's here

I haven't tried any of those programs- they sound kinda gimmicky to me. After all, a modem of a given speed is, I would think, limited to that speed. An alternative for you might be what is called a "shotgun" modem- it uses dual 56k modems (and 2 phone lines) to double your speed. Another alternative is satellite internet service. I've been using satellite service for about a year now, & I like it. Blazing fast speed (400k/sec) & fairly simple installation- and I don't have to deal with the cable company...

For the truly courageous, there are a few registry tweaks that really do make a discernable difference. Visit www.regedit.com (http://www.regedit.com) to learn more. Look under Performance >Network and Internet.

I strongly recommend you download and run RegEditX.exe (under downloads). It makes navigating the registry much easier.

You should try a shareware utility TweakDUN
from ZDnet.I have W'98 and it increased my
throughput(i.e.downloads) by about 80%!!The settings I use are MTU=576 (This seems to be
a standard now) and RWIN=2680
[(MTU-40)x5].The shareware version will only
let you select RWIN x4 or x6.Try x4 first.
I've been jacking with these settings a long
time and they really helped my machine! This
won't improve you connection speed because it
is dependent on line condition, distance from
switch,ISP,etc. This thing really works if you set it up right and when you compare
download speeds before and after remember
that there are other factors involved also i.e.ISP,# of hops, time of day, etc. so keep these in mind.It has a good online help guide
too if you like to read. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I think I will download and try out the TweakDUN. I think I remember hearing about it before, but was unsure if it worked. I am also intrested in the satellite internet service. Could you tell me more about it or point me to a URL with more info? Thanks

If your ISP supports it you might want to look into dual-analog (shotgun). Satellite is download only with a phone line for uplink. I think the Hughes site is www.directpc.com

Can you have more than one setting in the Extra Settings under Advanced Connections Settings. If so, how would you write it.

s32=66, s11=40 or s32=66 s11=40

Using the setting s32=66, s11=40 my modem won't dial.

Don't put the comma in.
Fancy "speed up your internet!" stuff is all POS junk. They don't usually work as advertised, and I hope nobody ever actually buys these things.

For registry tweaks, the best proggy is iSpeed, from http://members.cnx.net/reboot/mdmdrvs.htm . It's free, and if you follow the instructions at http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/modem/ you'll have no trouble.

Comtech: Thanks, it now works.
