Visiontek GeForce4 Ti4600 4X -Upgrade?

That is my card.

So would it be worth my while to upgrade soon? Is 8x really worth a new card? I am not totally thrilled with the thought of dropping $350-400 for a high end card...are there any 8x cards that won't break my wallet -yet still outperform this card?

Or should I just be happy with what I have and know that Doom III along with HL2 and the likes will run just fine with this card.

My rig is a Abit IC7, P4 2.4Ghz (800FSB) 1 gig (dual chan) PC3200 RAM and a 80GB SATA HDD. Should I splurge if I can afford it? I'd really like to keep it under $250 if I could...unless it just ain't worth it...

What about this card from Asus: Ti4200S (http://usa.asus.com/products/vga/v9280s/overview.htm)

Or would that be a downgrade and/or no real improvement?

8x is hardly much of a gain over 4x, even in synthetic benches. The ti4600 is still a decent-ish card for today, rather than spend loads of money on a small step up, if i wer eyou i would hang fire and keep hold of what you have until Ati and Nvidia release their follow ups to the r9800 and Fx5900 respectively and see how the field levels out. Otherwise you'll be spalshing out a lot of money now, on something that isnt really massively better than what you got
