My brother asked me to look at his sons system to see if I could figure out why he couldn't access the internet. There are 3 machines using ICS, 2 Win2k systems and a Win98se system, (the problem system).
The first thing I did was check to see if the Win98 system could see the other machines, and it could. All 3 systems were listed in the Network Neighbourhood.
For insurance I checked the workgroup name on one of the Win2k systems and it was the same as the Win98 system but in capitals whereas the Win98 workgroup name was in lower case.
I changed the Win98 workgroup name to capitals for consistency and it can no longer see the other systems! The Win2k system can see the Win98 system. I changed it back to lower case and still no see.
Why would this happen? Have I done a bad/dumb thing?

Make sure that the adapter is set to Automatically obtain and IP address in Network properties first. Open WINIPCFG and check the Default Gateway. It should be the IP address of the host machine. If it isn't, check the cables and Renew the IP.
Run INETWIZ.EXE on the Win98 machine and select LAN all the way. If some newbie went and tried to install AOL or similar on that machine, it may have gotten messed up.

do you have the ICS disk that was created to configure all the machines to use ICS?
do as Bill said, then load that disk again
and see if that works

workgroup name is not case sensitive.
run winipcfg on the problem computer. I'm guessing that's NOT the ICS host. It should have an IP of 192.168.0.x. the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is 192.168.0.1

This is old school...but it usually works with 98 to Win2K Machines.
First of all, though...in your network neighborhood properties, on the 98, is it set to log on to Window Family, or Microsoft Network?
If Microsoft Network, is should ask you to log onto windows when you restart/boot the PC...if you leave this password blank, you won't see the W2K machines. So...change it to Windows logon.
If this is already set...try installing NetBuei (spelling???) on the Win98 machine. NetBuei has less overhead than TCP/IP...and it is a little trick to getting it to see W2K machines...
Hope this helps...

NetBeui won't help him connect to the internet.
see if I could figure out why he couldn't access the internet.
NetBeui is the quickest, easiest way to setup simple file sharing, though. No IP addresses to worry about, etc.

Good point...MK...Overlooked that part...
Just load 'em all with XP Pro...that'll solve it...:)
Sometimes...deleting TCP/IP protocol, restarting, then reinstalling it helps...Win98. If the stack gets corrupted...this just may work...
