We just got caller ID but are getting tired of galloping across the apartment, stubbing toes and such, to look at the ID unit before picking up. Does anybody know of any good freeware programs that can show the caller ID and number on a unobtrusive window on my computer screen?

I've an OEM modem (3Com fax modem with voice,V.90, model 1749) which arrived without any instructions, so I'm sure I'm not using it to its full potential.

P.S. Remember my post about the $5 deal on the X10 Firecracker? It arrived in the mail a while ago and I just set it up: we can now turn on the coffeemaker from bed! And I rule the house lighting from my computer...power rush. I haven't been spammed yet, either.

I heard of a program from Microsoft, I think, that does all that. You can basically get just bare bones service for your telephone, and hook the line up to your computer. It has callerID, Call Waiting, VoiceMail, and a whole slew of other things with it. But why not just get a cordless phone with callerID on the handset? I just purchased a Sony 900mhz Cordless w/callerID for 78 bucks at SoundTrack.

I think you should go with the cordless phone with caller id. **** programs like that just tend to bog your computer down. They are always just sitting there using up memory. I had a voice mail program on my computer that came with my modem, and I took it off. Seems like every time I left a job running on my computer, some one would call, and that stupid voice mail program would answer and lock up my computer.

Right, right, but I was concentrating on the FREE aspect of things. I just broke the bank on a lovely computer with more memory than I can use right now and intend to get the most out of it. At some point I _will_ get a cordless phone with caller ID, but not just right now...
