Hi all,
I have been getting recently annoyed with spam these days, and these spammers are getting more agressive these days! First m e-mail, and now my IM!

Now, I'm getting spammed through MSN Messanger by unknown people NOT on my contact list. Is there any way that I can prevent people not on my list from contacting me?

Thanks.

There you go again!

One of the options in Messenger is to refuse messages from anyone who is not on your contact list. Done.

erh... i doubt it works

there's a hack outhere that will repeat whatever you say, or send you whatever message they want.

part of the reason why people are now trying to implement MSN mesenger only locally within the same office and not over the net.

but yeah, what you said, should partially work unless he's getting "spammed" by someone using those MSN hacks

Tell him his options before you recommend jumping through hoops. Let him tell us if he's hacked or not.

Same goes for Hotmail.
Didn't realize that til this morning. Had 80 messages and Hotmail was starting to block them due to space limits(I don't pay). Did a little investigating and found that option Bill refers to.
Now I'm checking the Junk Mail box and may have the Junk deleted automatically.

Yes, I've already checked off the box which allows only my contacts on the list to contact me. However, I'm still getting spammed by people NOT on my list.

I think AllGamer is right that someone is messing around with those hacks, and I do not appreciate their actions.

Omendata, would you know or happen to know what any of these hacks are called? (not that i'd wanna do it)

The worst is when you get a pop up through MSN, rather than an instant message. If that's happening to anyone, you can do this -
If you have XP follow this:

Start > Settings > Control Panel

Select "Administative Tools"

Then "Services"

Scroll down the list until you find "Messeger" (**** thing)

Double click it.

On "General" Tab
Startup Type -> Disabled

Then on the "Log on" Tab

In the box with "Hardware Profile"
Select Profile 1 and press the Disable button.

Apply the settings and make sure the Messager is disabled in the main list and your problems with pop ups will be over.

I was getting IM's from random sources giving me spam, but after blocking every one I got, they stopped after a while.

:)

ahhh right.... yea it's been around longer, sorry thats just me bein stupid. But if any1 is getting the random pop ups, then that's how they're stopped. It worked for me.

There's something you can do about it, but not sure if it'll stop them completely, but it should still help

have all your MSN Messenger user Use PROXY settings, instead of Direct connection

make them all to go via Port 80

but that does mean you'll need to run some piece of Proxy software for that to work

Analog X has some free one, unless you already have a Proxy server in your network

besides that, you can try Upgrading to MSN Instan Messenger 6.0

have not tried the new version my self, but my co worker says it has new features and options

so might worth checking out, heck it might have some new build in Anti hack
if MS cares about their "customers"
