Copied my query from google where im not having any luck:

Running IIS 5.1 on XP Pro - default installation from XP CD-ROM
Trying to set it up as a testing server for my website but
encountering the following problem:

The IIS service is running.
The Default website is running.
I created a simple html file and placed it in the wwwroot directory.
Then entered the following into address prompt in IE:
http://localhost/helloworld.html

A popup asks me if i want to connect to the internet - I click 'no' -
& get the standard 'page not found' error.

_______________
Now, i did have one other issue which i think is no longer the problem
but must menion it nevertheless:

Was getting the following error: unexpected error at 0x8ffe2740 -
looked it up on google and found that there was something else running
on port 80 (adsgone.exe) & i then stopped this application.
_______________

Further to my initial post, i have reviewed previous posts on google
and found one which i think may be similar but the thread is left
unresolved. Anyway, the guy was asked to run wfetch.exe as part of
the troubleshooting process ...so i have done same ...with the same
results:

started....
resolve hostname "localhost"WWWConnect::Connect
("127.0.0.1","80")\n
0x2742 (A socket operation encountered a dead network.):
socket()
finished.

I'm starting to tear my hair out now..

update as follows...

Been messing around with this and clearly i dont know what im dealing
with (yet) but now when i run wfetch i get the following:

resolve hostname "localhost"
WWWConnect::connect(127.0.0.1:80)\n
source port 1334\r\n
REQUEST:**********\n
RESPONSE:*********\n

Welcome to SysOpt :t

now, re: IIS

Ok the first thing you mention re:

A popup asks me if i want to connect to the internet - I click 'no' -
& get the standard 'page not found' error.

next time say yes

either way after that it should reach local host that page

or you can maybe try http://127.0.0.1/helloworld.html

yes it's the same as Localhost, but you never know what crazy stuff windows can pull out of the hat :)

anways if that doesn't work, then there's something seriously wrong

Like you said, yes that error message is rather Pertinent

seems like you already have something running in Port 80

so you must first uninstall that software , specially when you don't even know what it is

try that first, and let us know how it went

Hi Allgamer,

thanks for responding so quickly.

"next time say yes"
Did this but it still goes to page not found.

"or you can maybe try http://127.0.0.1/helloworld.html"

Have tried this...no joy..page not found

"Like you said, yes that error message is rather Pertinent

seems like you already have something running in Port 80"

I did initially have a problem with software running on port 80 (adsgone popup software) - but i uninstalled this..i reckon this was a seperate problem.

If you think of anything else, dont hesitate to post. I'm losing my hair very quickly with this
:(

have you rebooted the PC after the Uninstall?

do you also have ISA server running?

just run NETSTAT -a -n

and see if there's anything still using Port 80

after the reboot
