I just bought a new Abit BD7II Motherboard and installed my windows XP on my P4 1.8 with 512Meg DDR Ram.
For some reason My system can't restart, if you select to restart from windows or even during the installation of the windows environment the system would just pause and not restart.
The system can shutdown perfectly and all the other systems seem fine.
It doesn't freeze it simply stops at the point of restart and does nothing almost like something has been deactivated not allowing the restart.
Any Ideas

hmm... intesting
before re-installing and selecting F5
to select Standard PC
try changing your BIOS APM settings to S3 instead of S1

Disable APM altogether and see if it restarts then you can tinker with the power saving setttings to fine tune em.

I tried both of those solutions to no avail. I think the problem is either the Mobo or some HW installation i have setup.
This problem occured during the first stage of windows installation, (just after coping the initial files to the system)

Make sure your restart case button wire is properly plugged in could have worked itself loose especially when your working inside your case.

so in other words you built a system and it won't restart after a good XP install - one issue, or are you still trying to do an install and the system won't boot XP at some point after it restarts - another issue??

Basically the system right from the offset would not restart. It starts fine and the reset button is wired in right and works well. This problem is simply whenever i select to restart windows (not shut down windows).
This problem started right after i built the system and was installing windows, when the computer asks for a restart after copying files for xp install (the point when you can push enter to restart) it would just stop at the end of the pause or if i pushed enter it would just stop without restarting.
This is almost like the system has a block to stop it restarting.

If the system will restart from the reset button (physical) and not from software restart, it's obviously a software problem...Rerun the XP install CD as a system restore and see if it corrects the software problem.

This is not a XP Problem as far as i can see. The System will not restart even during the XP Installation.
When the system asks for a restart after copying the initial files it doesn't work

It's not THAT big a problem is it? Just shut down the computer and turn it on again :D

No its not a big problem i usually just wait for the mouse to power down and that is usually the indicator that the system is pretty much shut down.
After installation i don't really restart often.
I was just curious as to what is causing this problem.

I agree with omendata.
I loaded XP clean on a friends new machine, very similar to what you're talking about happened...
After litterally formatting and reformatting...installing and re-installing...it was a cheap piece of bad memory.
There is a good tool to use...I'm not 100% on the name though.
I think it's Expert Check...by a company called Trini Tech...or maybe even pcanalyzer.com??
You may have to google your way through that...
But, it's very nice...and it's saved me a couple times!

Dear all,
I am in the same situation that all what you mentionned.
I have Windows 2000 pro Sp3 installed with some software.
When I ask a shutdown, system shutdown but I should normally have the message on screen saying "It is now safe to turn off your system" but instead I get a black screen.
Whenm I ask for a restart of the system, it does not restart at all het stuck and only reset button is working fin.
If I thenm strart my system in SAFE mode, then it works again fne in all situation...
How can I dig out and anylyse what is causing a problem? could it be the result of installation of unsigned drivers for instamnce?
thnaks for your help
